Hot, physical work. Candidates will be working in and around hot furnaces, assisting with putting jobs into and out of the furnace.


In heat-treating, furnace, or thermal-processing shops, a racker is usually the person who loads, arranges (“racks”), and unloads parts for heat treatment.


Typical duties include:

  • Preparing parts for processing (cleaning, wiring, fixturing, hanging, or placing them in racks)
  • Loading parts into baskets, fixtures, or furnace racks
  • Loading and unloading furnaces
  • Making sure parts are spaced correctly so heat reaches them evenly
  • Preventing parts from warping, sticking together, or getting damaged
  • Sorting and packaging parts after processing
  • Following safety procedures around high-temperature equipment
