About Our District

The Madison Metropolitan School District is the second largest school district in Wisconsin. The district serves a beautifully diverse population of more than 25,000 students. Vel Phillips Memorial High School is seeking a dynamic and dedicated Technology Education Teacher to join our high school faculty. This full-time position includes teaching five classes in Construction Technology, 4 level 1 classes and a level 2 class. The ideal candidate will inspire students through hands-on learning and real-world applications while preparing them for both post-secondary education and entry into the skilled trades.

We are seeking an individual with Skilled Trades experience in construction. We are creating an industry-based construction program to prepare students for the workforce. The program will prepare students for the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCR) High School Builder certifications and Youth Apprenticeships. The program has an active SkillsUSA chapter, and students demonstrate their skills at district, regional, and state competitions. We have a program at each of our comprehensive high schools, and it is expected to work together to provide students with common standards and expectations as they complete the courses.

  • Key Responsibilities:

  • Teach 4 sections of Construction and Woodworking 1 classes, focusing on safety, tools, materials, framing, electrical, plumbing, and finish carpentry.

  • Teach 1 section of Construction and Woodworking 2 also focusing on safety, tools, materials, framing, electrical, plumbing, and finish carpentry. .

  • Develop and deliver engaging, project-based curriculum aligned with state and district standards.

  • Create a positive and inclusive classroom environment that fosters student learning and career readiness.

  • Collaborate with colleagues, industry professionals, and post-secondary partners to support student success.

  • Assist in facilitating internships and work-based learning opportunities for advanced students in collaboration with trade professionals.

  • Maintain industry-standard safety protocols and oversee the use and maintenance of shop equipment.

  • Participate in school-wide professional development and curriculum planning initiatives.

  • Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in the construction trades (e.g., carpentry, electrical, plumbing, general contracting).

  • Previous experience teaching or mentoring high school students.

  • Experience working with industry professionals to support student career pathways, including internships and apprenticeships.

  • Strong organizational skills and a commitment to student success.

  • Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Technology Education, Industrial Arts, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent industry certification and teaching license eligibility).

  • Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) teaching license in [one or more of the following areas] to cover the respective grade level(s) being taught:
    Technology Education
    Family and Consumer Education
    Marketing Education
    Agriculture Education
    Business Education
