Assistant Professor of History

The Department of Humanities at Sul Ross State University International invites applications for a tenure-track, 9-month position as Assistant Professor of History with an emphasis on nineteenth or twentieth century U.S. History and a strong background in Public History to begin in the Fall of 2026. We seek a dynamic and innovative scholar with a strong commitment to teaching, research, and community engagement. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in History with a specific emphasis on Public History, such as “Introduction to Public History,” “Oral History,” “Museum Studies,” “Digital History,” and “Historic Preservation” among others.

Doctorate in History is required. ABD applicants will be considered, but appointment will be at the instructor rank and all degree requirements must be completed by February 1, 2027.

Two years of teaching experience (graduate student teaching experience accepted) in US History or related history field.

In-person teaching and advising in Eagle Pass, Texas.

Any qualifications to be considered in lieu of stated minimums require the prior approval of the Human Resources Director.

Preferred

We welcome applicants with experience in mentoring student leadership and nurturing experiential learning in public history.

Primary Responsibilities Primary responsibilities include the following:

Teaching starts August 24, 2026.

Teaching a 4-4 course load of face to face in Eagle Pass, hybrid, and online undergraduate and occasional graduate courses.

Advising students and mentoring history majors’ activities and organizations.

Demonstrating progress in research.

Participating in curriculum development and assessment.

Engaging in service to the department, college, and university.

Responsible for personal safety and the safety of others; must exercise due caution and practice safe work habits at all times.
