The project:Following strong passenger growth from 2009 to 2019, increasing from 31 million to over 46 million passengers annually, the airport is planning for future recovery and long-term demand. Currently, only the main runway (MRW) is used in standard operations, with the northern runway (NRW) acting as a standby when the MRW is unavailable. The existing single runway operation constrains capacity at the airport. The northern runway project (NRP) proposes to bring the NRW into routine use for departures, operating in conjunction with the MRW to enable dual runway operations (DRO). The purpose of the NRP is to increase the airport’s overall capacity by more than 10 million passengers per annum and support operational resilience.
