AWS Infrastructure Services (AIS) owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. We support all AWS data centers and the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure continual access to AWS services. You’ll join a diverse team of engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and other vital roles, collaborating to deliver safety, security, and scalable capacity at the lowest possible cost.

Amazon is looking for an energetic, detail-oriented individual to join our Data Center Engineering Operations Team in the Greater Milan Area. This team maintains the data center’s critical physical infrastructure to ensure 100% availability of the data center’s MEP and first-class customer service to internal teams.

The Data Center Chief Engineer (CE) is responsible for ensuring that all electrical, mechanical, and fire/life safety equipment within the data center operates at peak efficiency. This includes planned preventative maintenance, daily corrective work, and emergency response. The CE acts as an expert technical resource for onsite Engineering Operations Technicians (EOT) and third-party vendors, serving as the focal point for all facility operations within owned and operated data centers.

The CE will manage large-scale projects and provide support for new region initiatives from conception to completion. Projects involve independent work and collaboration with engineering, automation, procurement, and finance teams in local and global settings. The CE will create and track milestones, obtain and manage quotes, and document outcomes for replication at other facilities. Projects aim to drive innovation and resiliency while reducing operational costs.

The CE directs, trains, and supports EOTs in electrical and mechanical troubleshooting and operations, including site/equipment-specific training exercises. Equipment includes, but is not limited to, stand-by diesel generators, switchgear, UPSs, PDUs, AHUs, chillers, cooling towers, chemical treatment systems, pumps, motors, VFDs, and building automation systems.

The role is based in the Greater Milan area with flexibility to travel within the EMEA region if required.

• Oversee day-to-day operations and maintenance of mechanical and electrical equipment in data centers
• Assist in design and build-out of new facilities
• Act as escalation point for facilities-related issues within the data center region; work OT hours as needed to support site stability
• Perform root cause analysis of equipment failures
• Troubleshoot and report facility and data center-level events within internal SLA
• Create and deploy new standard practices for Engineering Operations Technicians, Chief Engineers, and vendor support teams
• Provide training and guidance to EOTs; assist in recruiting efforts
• Ensure safety procedures are adhered to by vendor and Amazon staff
• Utilize internal Change Management Systems to manage building workflows
• MV/LV isolation to facilitate MV maintenance
• Provide metric availability reporting on a weekly basis

Data centers are located in remote areas outside Milan; access via public transport may be limited. A valid driving license is required.

This is a 100% in-person onsite position. Working hours are 8 AM – 5 PM Milan time, Monday to Friday, with no shift work.

Interviews will be conducted in English as the team is international and based in the Greater Milan area.

Basic Qualifications

• Good verbal and written English communication skills
• Apprentice/trades certified or diploma in an Electrical field
• Demonstrate key electrical competencies (Practice & Theory)
• Knowledge of mechanical systems (Mechanical, HVAC, Controls)
• Ability to draft accurate support procedures in English, system documentation, and issue tracking entries
• Ability to take full ownership of technical issues
• Willingness to travel between data center sites, and internationally if required
• Solid IT skills; experience with MS Office

• 3+ years of experience in operations and on-call support for data center facilities or mission-critical plants
• An undergraduate degree in a technical field (EE, MechE, IndustrialE)
• Project management experience
