Data Engineer - Contract (Maternity Leave Cover)

The Opportunity
We are seeking an experienced Data Engineer to join a large enterprise environment on a maternity leave cover contract, supporting critical Data & Analytics (D&A) initiatives.

This role has been created to minimise impact to the FY25 Data Engineering roadmap following a team departure. There is potential for further contract or permanent opportunities pending project delivery and business confirmation.

Key Responsibilities
You will play a hands-on role across platform upgrades, data processing optimisation, and enterprise data initiatives, including:
Core priorities

• Upgrade Databricks clusters from v9.1 to v14.3 (compliance requirement)
• Enhance Databricks data processing to improve performance and reduce costs, including:
  • Implementing Autoloader
  • Transition from all-purpose clusters to job clusters
  • Building and optimising Workflows

Additional responsibilities (time permitting)

• Deliver planned data ingestions into the Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW) (simple to medium complexity)
• Support on-prem EDW decommissioning
• Provide project support for data ingestion initiatives
• Contribute to Data Engineering BAU support
• Assist with Microsoft Fabric trials and learnings, where required

About You
You are a capable and pragmatic Data Engineer who can hit the ground running in a complex environment.
Key skills & experience

• Strong hands-on experience with Databricks
• Proven background in data ingestion, transformation, and optimisation
• Experience working with EDW environments (cloud and on-prem)
• Ability to manage upgrades, performance improvements, and compliance requirements
• Comfortable providing BAU and project support
• Strong communication skills and stakeholder engagement capability
