Location: Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia
Salary: AUD 170,621 – 191,949 (depending on experience) + 15.4% superannuation
Employment type: 24‑Month Fixed Term (Temporary)

Team
The Data, Analytics and AI (AiDA) team is essential for ASIC’s transformation into a digitally enabled, data‑informed regulator. The data science team within AiDA collaborates with business units to develop machine learning solutions, utilising the latest technologies to address regulatory and compliance challenges in surveillance and enforcement.
The Role
As the Data Science Manager, you will play a pivotal role within the AiDA team, responsible for driving innovation through advanced analytics. This role oversees the delivery of analytical solutions leveraging ML and AI for ASIC, while providing leadership and guidance to the Data Science team.
Responsibilities
- Provide senior leadership within the Data Science team, identifying and assessing emerging trends, systemic risks, and potential misconduct across financial services and markets.
- Manage, develop and mentor a small team of data scientists, graduates and interns to ensure the effective delivery of high‑quality data science solutions.
- Perform hands‑on data analysis, including exploratory techniques and advanced statistical methods.
- Design enterprise machine learning frameworks, evaluate platforms and tools to enable business self‑service insights and create solutions that enhance efficiency across ASIC business teams.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, industry groups and domestic and international regulatory bodies.
- Investigate and trial innovative analytical solutions, assessing their applicability to ASIC through proof‑of‑concept initiatives.
- Contribute to defining the team’s strategic direction and long‑term objectives.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate for this role will be a strategic leader with strong technical expertise in data science, machine learning and AI. They will combine advanced analytical skills with the ability to translate complex data into actionable insights that support ASIC’s regulatory objectives. With proven experience managing and mentoring high‑performing teams, they will demonstrate exceptional communication and stakeholder engagement skills, a deep understanding of financial services and markets and a passion for innovation through emerging technologies.
Additional Qualifications
- Tertiary qualifications in a quantitative discipline such as Applied Finance, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science or Economics.
- Extensive experience in analytics ideally gained within corporate, consulting, government or academic environments.
- Proficiency in programming languages such as R and Python with exposure to cloud platforms like AWS and Databricks.
- Significant demonstrated experience in manipulating and analysing complex, semi‑structured or unstructured data to solve challenging problems.
- Proven ability to manage projects within tight deadlines while collaborating effectively with business stakeholders to deliver critical outcomes.
- Demonstrated success in managing and mentoring data science professionals to enhance technical capability and organisational impact.
- Strong stakeholder engagement skills including building, maintaining and leveraging client and industry networks.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to convey complex concepts clearly and influence key decision‑makers.
