Infrastructure and Database Developer/Performance Tuning Sybase Role
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Infrastructure and Database Developer with a strong focus on performance tuning for Sybase database systems. The ideal candidate will be responsible for the design, development, optimization, and administration of our Sybase environments, ensuring high performance, availability, and reliability. This role requires a blend of development expertise, deep knowledge of Sybase architecture, proactive performance management, and infrastructure support for related automation and deployment tools.
Key Responsibilities:
- Database Development:
- Designing, developing, and implementing robust database solutions using Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise (ASE).
- Writing, testing, and optimizing complex SQL queries, stored procedures, triggers, and user-defined functions to support application requirements.
- Creating and maintaining database schemas, tables, views, indexes, and other database objects.
- Collaborating closely with application development teams to ensure efficient data access patterns, data integrity, and adherence to best practices.
- Performance Tuning:
- Proactively monitoring Sybase database performance metrics, including CPU utilization, I/O rates, memory usage, and network activity.
- Identifying, diagnosing, and resolving performance bottlenecks in SQL queries, stored procedures, and overall database configurations.
- Analyzing query execution plans and recommending appropriate indexing strategies, query rewrites, and database parameter adjustments.
- Implementing and managing advanced performance-enhancing techniques such as database partitioning, data compression, and query hints.
- Conducting capacity planning and scaling databases to meet evolving business demands and ensure future growth.
- Infrastructure Support:
- Managing and supporting automation tools such as Autosys for scheduling database-related jobs and processes.
- Working with deployment tools like UDeploy for automated deployments and releases of database code and configurations.
- Collaborating with system administrators and operations teams to ensure smooth integration of database systems within the broader IT infrastructure.
- Troubleshooting infrastructure-related issues impacting database performance or availability.
- Documentation and Support:
- Creating and maintaining comprehensive technical documentation for database designs, operational procedures, performance tuning guides, and troubleshooting runbooks.
- Providing expert support and guidance to development teams and end-users on all database-related matters.
Essential Skills and Qualifications:
- Deep Expertise in Sybase: Extensive hands-on experience (X+ years) with Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise (ASE) is mandatory.
- SQL Mastery: Advanced proficiency in writing and optimizing complex SQL, including T-SQL for Sybase.
- Performance Tuning Tools: Proficient with Sybase-specific performance monitoring and tuning tools (e.g., sp_sysmon, dbcc, perfmon, Sybase Central, or third-party tools).
- Infrastructure Tools: Experience with job scheduling tools like Autosys and deployment automation platforms like UDeploy.
- Operating Systems: Strong understanding of Linux/Unix operating systems, including shell scripting (Bash, Ksh) and ideally Python for automation.
- Database Architecture: Solid knowledge of database design principles, data modeling (relational and dimensional), and normalization/denormalization techniques.
- Troubleshooting: Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and diagnostic skills with a methodical approach to complex issues.
- Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively collaborate with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Proactive Mindset: Ability to anticipate potential issues, implement preventative measures, and drive continuous improvement in database performance and stability.
