Database Backup Specialist – MS SQL Server Focus

Role Summary

We are seeking a Senior Backup Administrator with deep expertise in Cohesity, responsible for designing, managing, and supporting SQL Server data protection in large enterprise environments.

This is a backup-first role where Cohesity is the primary responsibility (60–65%), and strong hands-on MS SQL Server DBA experience (35–40%) is mandatory to ensure reliable backup, restore, and disaster recovery for complex SQL workloads, including Always On Availability Groups (AAG).

This position is not suitable for SQL-only DBAs or backup-only L2/L3 Cohesity support profiles.


Skill Split

  • Cohesity (SQL Data Protection): 60–65% – Primary
  • MS SQL Server DBA: 35–40% – Mandatory & Strong



Key Responsibilities


1. Cohesity – SQL Backup & Recovery (Primary Focus)

  • Administer and manage Cohesity DataProtect for MS SQL Server workloads.
  • Design and configure SQL protection policies, including:
  • Full, differential, and transaction log backups
  • SLA-based retention policies
  • Perform SQL database restores, including:
  • Full database restores
  • Point-in-time recovery
  • AAG-aware restores
  • Troubleshoot and resolve Cohesity issues related to:
  • SQL VSS writers
  • Failed backups and restores
  • Performance, throughput, and retention failures
  • Conduct regular DR testing and restore validation for SQL databases.
  • Monitor Cohesity cluster health, capacity planning, and upgrades.
  • Act as the lead during critical recovery and outage scenarios, working closely with DBA and application teams.



2. MS SQL Server DBA (Mandatory Supporting Skill)

Candidates must have hands-on SQL Server administration experience, not just backup exposure.

  • Build and configure MS SQL Server environments from scratch, including:
  • OS prerequisites
  • SQL installation, patching, and hardening
  • Instance configuration and best practices
  • Design, implement, and support Always On Availability Groups (AAG).
  • Support SQL High Availability and Disaster Recovery:
  • Failover and recovery testing
  • Backup/restore validation
  • Perform advanced SQL troubleshooting, including:
  • Blocking and deadlocks
  • Performance bottlenecks
  • Memory, CPU, tempdb, and I/O tuning
  • Execute SQL Server upgrades, migrations, and patching.
  • Develop and maintain T-SQL and PowerShell scripts for monitoring, automation, and maintenance.



Mandatory Skills & Experience

  • 10+ years of overall IT experience
  • 7+ years of hands-on experience with:
  • Cohesity DataProtect (SQL workloads)
  • MS SQL Server administration
  • Proven experience in:
  • Protecting SQL Servers using Cohesity
  • SQL backup and recovery internals
  • Always On Availability Groups (AAG)
  • Strong understanding of:
  • SQL Server architecture and internals
  • Windows Server
  • VMware / Hyper-V environments
  • Scripting skills:
  • T-SQL
  • PowerShell



Profiles That Will NOT Fit This Role

· SQL-only DBAs with no backup ownership

· Backup-only or L2/L3 Cohesity administrators

· Candidates who:

Have never built a SQL Server

Have never supported or restored AAG environments

Only monitor backup jobs without SQL troubleshooting experience



Preferred Qualifications

  • Microsoft SQL Server / Azure DBA Certification
  • Cohesity Certification
  • Experience working in large enterprise production environments
