What We Do: New Door Ventures prepares young people (ages 17-24) from the culturally rich communities of San Francisco, Oakland, and San Jose for work and life. Through our three programs (Employment, Education, and Career Services), we provide dedicated support and a safe space for young people to explore career opportunities and build the skills and confidence they need to achieve economic mobility. Read more about How We Show Up here. About the Job: The Director of Advancement leads the fundraising and external relations functions for New Door. In addition to oversight for communications, volunteerism, and fundraising, the Director of Advancement will be skilled with major donor programming, board management, and strategic partnership building. Our CEO sees this as a unique opportunity for community storytelling and narrative change- many stakeholders have not yet heard why New Door's work matters to the community and each individual we serve. This position is exempt and is located primarily on-site at New Door's San Francisco headquarters location. New Door Ventures employs a hybrid work location policy, with a 3:2 office/remote cadence. What Success Looks Like: Our ideal candidate will be a highly skilled, self-motivated fundraiser. The finalist will walk in the door ready to manage up, steward major donors, work collaboratively and innovatively, communicate effectively, bring an improvement lens to systems including Salesforce, and champion the advancement of economic mobility for opportunity youth. Primary Responsibilities: Team Management, Organizational Leadership & Collaboration - 30% You'll manage a 4-person team which includes our communications/external relations function. Twice-yearly performance evaluation cycles are designed to support staff learning and development. As a part of annual planning you will set department goals, direct department work plans, and, alongside the CEO and leadership team, participate in building org-wide goals. LT members establish processes for interdepartmental relationship management, and on the development team this includes external partners, ensuring all opportunities for fundraising are recognized and pursued. You'll also be a strategic partner to our CEO in board recruitment strategies, establishing a prepared team of board level fundraisers. The rest of your week will be primarily devoted to fundraising! Position priorities are: Major Donor Fundraising - 25% Lead strategy to grow individual giving, with a strong emphasis on major donors ($10K). Identify, research, and qualify new major donor prospects Partner with the CEO on cultivation and solicitation of top-tier donors Design cultivation plans tailored to each prospect's interests and capacity Ensure high-touch stewardship of existing donors Donor Cultivation & Success - 25% Set the overall fundraising strategy for individual and institutional giving, including public funding Primary leadership for annual revenue including coaching and training of direct fundraising staff of 4 to cultivate, solicit, and secure new donors Develop, plan, and execute a yearly series of donor cultivation events Strategic collaboration across the organization to ensure a secure pipeline of engagement from external partners. Board & Leadership Engagement - 10% Staff lead for the Board Development Committee Equip and partner with the Board of Directors to expand organization major donor network. Assist Board members with cultivation and stewardship of their respective portfolios. Provide regular pipeline updates to the Board Development Committee and Board Secondary Responsibilities - 10% Oversee managers to ensure sound administration of development activities, including: the development calendar, Salesforce database, record keeping, grant renewals, grant reporting, and donor communications. Board and other reporting: provide detailed reports about fundraising progress to the Development Committee monthly, to full board on a quarterly basis, and other times as requested. Oversee production of agency newsletter, annual Impact Report, and other collateral. Ensure agency website and other social media are maintained with updated content, photos, and links. Preferred Qualifications & Skills: 7-10 years' experience in fund development in the Bay Area, including established knowledge of regional philanthropic networks Knowledge of current trends in philanthropy, board engagement, external communication, etc. Knowledge / experience / familiarity of the communities to which New Door delivers programming Inspirational leader who has exceptional interpersonal and relationship-building abilities An organized and strategic thinker who is comfortable with oversight and project management and holds a high attention to detail People management skills: across, down, and up A self-starter with strong problem-solving skills. Ability to use appropriate computer and reporting systems including Windows operating system, Microsoft Office Suite, and Outlook (Salesforce knowledge a plus).
