Job Description
Job Title: Dreamer - V (Optics Design Intern)
Location: Remote
Duration: 6 months
Reports To: Dreamer - III (Project Manager)
About the Role
We're looking for a sharp and analytical Optics Design Intern to support our team in engineering high-precision optical systems. This is a technical, research-driven internship where you'll contribute directly to live projects from simulation and ray tracing to bench testing and validation. If you are passionate about the physics of light and eager to turn theoretical models into functional reality, we want to hear from you.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in the design and simulation of optical components and systems (lenses, reflectors, light guides) using ray-tracing software.
- Perform tolerance analysis, stray light analysis, and radiometric calculations to validate designs.
- Collaborate with the mechanical design team on opto-mechanical packaging to ensure precise alignment and thermal stability.
- Document optical specifications and generate detailed performance reports (MTF charts, spot diagrams, etc.) for internal reviews.
- Research new optical materials, coatings, and sensing technologies to support product innovation.
Requirements
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Optics, Photonics, Physics, or Electrical/Mechanical Engineering.
- Strong understanding of Geometrical and Physical Optics (refraction, diffraction, polarization, radiometry).
- Familiarity with optical design software such as Zemax OpticStudio or CODE V
- Basic proficiency in MATLAB or Python for data analysis and scripting.
- Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail (precision is key).
- Self-motivated, organized, and able to manage time across research and engineering tasks.
Nice to Have
- Hands-on experience with optical bench setups (lasers, lenses, mirrors, detectors).
- Knowledge of optical manufacturing processes (molding, diamond turning, thin-film coating).
- Familiarity with CAD software like SolidWorks or Fusion 360 for opto-mechanical integration.
What You'll Gain
- Real-world experience in optical engineering from simulation to physical prototyping.
- Direct mentorship from experienced engineers and exposure to cross-disciplinary teams.
- A chance to work on challenging problems involving light propagation, imaging, or illumination.
- An inside look at how optical concepts are transformed into mass-producible products.
