The Role:
The CX Engineer (Electrical Bias) is responsible for the planning, execution, and management of commissioning activities for mission-critical electrical systems within data center environments. This role ensures that all electrical infrastructure is installed, tested, integrated, and handed over in full compliance with project requirements, safety standards, and operational objectives.
The responsibilities for this role include, but are not limited to, the following:
Commissioning Management
- Lead and manage the end-to-end commissioning process for electrical systems, from pre-functional testing through integrated systems testing and final handover.
- Ensure commissioning activities are executed in accordance with approved commissioning plans, project schedules, and quality standards.
Electrical Systems Testing & Validation
- Commission and validate critical electrical infrastructure, including but not limited to
- Medium- and low-voltage switchgear
- Transformers
- Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems
- Standby generators
- Electrical distribution systems (PDUs, RPPs, busways, panels)
- Verify system performance under normal, abnormal, and failure conditions.
Project Coordination & Oversight
- Plan, coordinate, and lead commissioning activities in collaboration with design engineers, construction teams, vendors and operations stakeholders.
- Act as the primary technical authority for electrical commissioning issues on site.
Power Systems Integration
- Ensure seamless integration of electrical systems with mechanical, controls, BMS/EPMS, and IT infrastructure.
- Validate system redundancy, fault tolerance, and reliability to support mission-critical operations.
Documentation & Reporting
- Develop and manage commissioning documentation, including:
- Commissioning plans and schedules
- Test procedures and scripts
- Method statements and risk assessments
- Final commissioning reports and handover packages
- Provide clear, accurate progress and risk reports to project and client stakeholders.
Standards & Compliance
- Ensure all electrical systems and commissioning activities comply with applicable codes, standards, and best practices, including:
- NEC, IEC, NFPA, IEEE
- Uptime Institute Tier Standards
- TIA-942 and client-specific requirements
- Support third-party audits and certifications where required.
Factory & Site Acceptance Testing (FAT & SAT)
- Plan, coordinate, and lead FAT and SAT activities for electrical equipment.
- Review vendor documentation, test results, and corrective actions to ensure readiness for site installation and integration.
Risk Management & Troubleshooting
- Identify technical, schedule, and safety risks related to electrical commissioning.
- Implement mitigation strategies and lead root-cause analysis and troubleshooting to resolve issues efficiently and safely.
Health, Safety & Environmental Compliance
- Demonstrate a deep understanding of electrical safety, particularly when working with:
- Live electrical components
- Three-phase AC power systems
- DC power systems
- Ensure all commissioning activities comply with health and safety regulations, permit-to-work systems, and lock-out/tag-out (LOTO) procedures.
- Promote and enforce a strong safety culture across all commissioning activities.
Leadership & Team Development
- Lead, mentor, and support commissioning engineers, contractors, and subcontractors.
- Provide technical guidance, training, and oversight to ensure consistent commissioning quality and performance.
Continuous Improvement
- Adhere to company policies, procedures, and quality systems.
- Promote continuous improvement, lessons learned, and commissioning best practices across projects.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will bring deep technical expertise in electrical commissioning within mission-critical environments, combined with strong leadership, analytical capability, and a disciplined approach to safety, quality, and compliance.
Technical Experience & Expertise
Proven track record in commissioning critical electrical systems within data centers or other mission-critical facilities, including:
UPS systems
Ring Main Units (RMU)
Medium- and low-voltage switchgear
Standby generators
Transformers (including CT/VT)
Power Distribution Units (PDUs)
Strong understanding of low- to medium-voltage electrical systems, power distribution architectures, and backup power solutions for data centers and large commercial buildings.
Experience in 220 kV substation commissioning is a strong advantage.
Solid knowledge of monitoring and control systems, including SCADA and Electrical Power Monitoring/Management Systems (EPMS).
Demonstrated experience in developing Functional Performance Test (FPT) and Integrated Systems Test (IST) scripts and leading on-site teams to successfully execute these tests in live data center environments.
Working knowledge of commissioning Life Safety Systems (e.g., fire alarm, emergency power-off, life safety interfaces) is desirable.
Proven ability to review electrical designs and specifications from a commissionability and operability perspective.
Tools, Software & Digital Competence
Proficiency with electrical and power system software tools such as AutoCAD and ETAP.
Experience using project management tools such as MS Project or equivalent.
Familiarity with BIM tools for coordination and clash detection.
Hands-on experience with commissioning and construction management platforms such as CxAlloy, Procore, Compass, or similar systems.
Working knowledge of cloud platforms (Google, Microsoft, Amazon) and exposure to data analytics for performance validation and reporting.
Project Delivery & Operational Experience
Demonstrated experience managing commissioning activities across schedules, budgets, and resources.
Proven capability to conduct technical audits and in-depth health checks of existing facilities, including assessment of installed equipment, systems performance, and compliance.
Experience delivering projects across the full data center project lifecycle, from design review through commissioning, integrated testing, and operational handover, is highly desirable.
Leadership, Communication & Problem Solving
Strong leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to guide multi-disciplinary teams, contractors, and vendors.
Effective communicator, capable of interfacing confidently with clients, project stakeholders, and technical teams.
Highly developed analytical and troubleshooting skills, with the ability to identify, assess, and resolve complex technical issues efficiently and safely.
Essential Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (B.E., B.Tech, or equivalent).
10+ years of hands-on experience in testing and commissioning of electrical power supply and distribution systems, covering high-, medium-, and low-voltage equipment.
Minimum 5 years of commissioning experience within the data center industry, including demonstrable leadership of Integrated Systems Testing (IST).
Based in Mumbai, India, or willing to relocate to Mumbai.
