This is a true Engineering Manager role , designed for leaders who balance people leadership, delivery, and technical judgement .

Typical split:

  • ~80% Engineering Management

  • ~20% hands-on Technical involvement

You won’t be coding full-time, but you’ll be expected to:

  • Step into the codebase when needed

  • Review architecture and design decisions

  • Unblock complex technical challenges

  • Make sound trade-offs as the system approaches scale limits

Your team will run multiple parallel initiatives , often spanning global teams. Success in this role comes from creating clarity, maintaining momentum, and delivering consistently even when you can’t deep-dive into every line of code.

What You’ll Own:

Build and Scale a High-Performance Team

  • Lead, mentor, and grow a team of 6-8 engineers initially, with clear growth ahead

  • Establish strong engineering standards, delivery discipline, and ownership

  • Build a culture that blends startup pace with big-tech maturity

Drive Delivery at Scale

  • Own delivery across multiple concurrent initiatives

  • Balance speed with stability as transaction volumes and system complexity increase

  • Proactively identify and manage risk as the platform approaches capacity limits

Technical Leadership

  • Operate in a language-agnostic environment

  • Current stack includes C#, .NET, Go, Rust  (with evolution ongoing)

  • Work closely with partners across payments, cloud, and platform services

  • Contribute to architectural decisions that will support global scale

Product Partnership

  • Work in close partnership with senior Product leadership

  • Translate product strategy into executable engineering plans

  • Collaborate daily with teams across Australia, the US, and Asia

The Background We’re Looking For:

This role suits someone who has:

  • strong engineering foundation  with genuine technical credibility

  • Led teams through scale-up phases , not just early-stage startups

  • Experience in large, mature tech environments  with strong process and governance

  • The ability to move quickly without sacrificing quality or sustainability

Ideal profile:
Big-tech / FAANG-style experience combined with high-growth platform or scale-up exposure.

Not a fit if you:

  • Want to remain 100% hands-on

  • Have only worked in very early, scrappy startups

  • Prefer local-only teams or minimal cross-timezone collaboration

Ways of Working

  • Remote within Australia 

  • Core hours aligned to AU time

  • Expect 1–2 early morning or occasional evening calls  due to global collaboration
