Enterprise DNS & DHCP Operations Engineer -L1


Role Purpose

The L1 Enterprise DNS & DHCP Operations Engineer will be responsible for day-to-day monitoring, basic configuration, and operational support of enterprise DNS (BIND & Microsoft AD DNS) and DHCP services. The role focuses on service availability, routine changes, documentation, and escalation to L2/L3 teams when required .


Key Responsibilities

DNS Operations (BIND & AD DNS)

  • Monitor DNS services and servers using enterprise monitoring tools (e.g., HPOM or equivalent).
  • Perform routine DNS record management:
  • A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, TXT, SRV, PTR, NS records.
  • Create and manage DNS zones on Master and Slave servers as per approved requests.
  • Configure and maintain DNS forwarders and zone delegations.
  • Support IP address changes and FQDN updates following approved change procedures.
  • Validate DNS resolution, replication, and zone transfers.
  • Take scheduled backups of DNS configuration files on master and slave servers.
  • Assist application and infrastructure teams with DNS-related requests and troubleshooting.


DHCP Operations

  • Monitor DHCP services and scope utilization.
  • Assist in creation and modification of DHCP scopes, reservations, and exclusions (as per SOP).
  • Support IP allocation issues and escalate capacity risks to senior teams.
  • Maintain DHCP documentation and address management records.


Linux & Server Operations

  • Perform basic Linux server administration tasks:
  • Monitoring disk space, CPU, memory, and service health.
  • Assist with OS patching, compliance checks, and upgrades under guidance.
  • Support scheduled backups, restore validation, and DR readiness.
  • Execute standard operational tasks using documented SOPs.


Monitoring, Reporting & Documentation

  • Maintain daily operational checklists for DNS and DHCP services.
  • Prepare weekly and monthly operational reports (uptime, changes, incidents).
  • Update Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and operational runbooks.
  • Follow ITIL-based incident, change, and problem management processes.


Support & Coordination

  • Provide support to internal teams during planned activities (including after office hours when required).
  • Participate in on-call or shift rotations as defined by operations.
  • Escalate incidents promptly to L2/L3 teams with clear diagnostics and logs.


Required Skills & Qualifications

Technical Skills

  • Basic understanding of DNS concepts and architecture .
  • Hands-on exposure to:
  • BIND DNS
  • Microsoft AD DNS
  • DHCP services
  • Familiarity with Linux (preferably RHEL or compatible distributions).
  • Understanding of networking fundamentals:
  • TCP/IP, subnets, DNS, DHCP, firewalls.
  • Experience with monitoring tools (HPOM or similar).
  • Basic exposure to backup and restore procedures.


Soft Skills

  • Good communication and coordination skills.
  • Ability to follow defined processes and SOPs strictly.
  • Willingness to learn and work under guidance.
  • Strong attention to detail and documentation discipline.
  • Ability to work in shifts and handle after-hours support when required.


Experience & Education

  • Experience:
  • 0–2 years of experience in IT Infrastructure Operations
  • Freshers with strong fundamentals may be considered
  • Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Computer Science, IT, or related field


Work Environment

  • Enterprise production environment supporting critical business services .
  • May require after-hours or weekend support during maintenance windows or incidents.

Strict adherence to change management, security, and audit requirements.
