Summary Statement
The City of Boise Finance Internship opportunity offers a hands-on opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students to gain real-world experience in municipal finance while contributing to meaningful, high-impact projects.
Interns will support initiatives in data automation, process improvement, cash forecasting, workflow design, and business operations across multiple finance divisions, including Treasury and Revenue. This internship provides exposure to how local government financial systems operate while building practical skills in analytics, automation tools, project management, and operational design. Students will collaborate with experienced professionals, gain valuable mentorship, and develop a strong foundation for careers in public-sector finance, accounting, business operations, or analytics.
This will be a temporary 19/hour per week job - Tentative start date is the week of May 18th, running through mid-August.
Essential Functions
Program Objectives
The objectives of the City of Boise Internship Program are to:
+ Gain broad exposure to all functional areas of municipal finance operations
+ Lead and support cross-divisional process improvement initiatives and project management efforts
+ Develop foundational skills in creating workflows, internal policies, and operational documentation
+ Build and enhance financial modeling, analytical, and business operations capabilities
+ Help interns determine if a career in municipal finance is right for them
Internship Activities
Interns will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities across multiple divisions:
Treasury
+ Build and enhance cash forecasting models
+ Construct process automation for approval workflows
+ Critically analyze and augment internal controls
+ Build BI reporting and dashboards
+ Learn the essentials of project management
Revenue (Accounts Receivable)
+ Build cloud-based Nintex Process Manager process maps
+ Automate critical processes using Power Platform tools
+ Shadow experienced professionals
Process Improvement & Business Operations (Cross-Divisional)
+ Design and implement operational workflows from the ground up
+ Draft, develop, and refine internal regulations and policy documentation
+ Conduct process assessments and recommend efficiency improvements
+ Support project management initiatives across all finance divisions
+ Collaborate with stakeholders to standardize procedures and enhance interdepartmental coordination
Requirements
To be eligible for the City of Boise Internship Program, applicants must be:
+ Undergraduate or graduate students with a strong academic record or graduated in the last 12 months from an accredited university
+ Majoring in accounting, finance, business administration, public administration, or a related field
+ Have a strong interest in accounting, treasury, business operations, or strategic planning
+ Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills for creating documentation and internal guidance
+ Be able to work up to 19 hours per week (negotiable)
+ Be able to commit to the entire internship program from May through August 2026
Preferred Experience
+ Experience with BI reporting such as Power BI or Tableau
+ Experience with Microsoft Power Platform
+ Exposure to process mapping, workflow design, or project management methodologies
+ Experience creating policy documentation, standard operating procedures, or training materials
Special Requirements
Valid state-issued driver’s license.
