Job Summary

Denver Health Medical Center is recruiting for a Physician Assistant for our Gender Affirming Surgery program and reconstructive urology team. Our Gender Affirmation Division is committed to excellence in patient care, research, and education. Our team offers comprehensive, evidence-based and affirming care for transgender individuals that is in line with the standards of care set by the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH). The department covers a wide variety of patient care activities including gender affirming surgeries, breast reconstruction, trauma, lymphedema, extremity reconstruction, hand surgery and complex surgical wound care. These surgeries often require collaborative, multidisciplinary care.

Responsibilities include: under general supervision of a physician, as described by state regulations/requirements, works with clinical staff, residents and attending physicians to provide care and treatment in outpatient, inpatient, urgent/emergent care and operative settings as appropriate. Performs history and physical examinations, examines and diagnoses patients and develops treatment plans. Performs testing, provides referrals to other providers as needed, writes prescriptions, and performs procedures within the scope of expertise, protocols and available equipment. Assists surgeons in operating room on genital gender affirming surgery and on reconstructive urology procedures. Candidate will be expected to learn essential surgical skills including, but not limited to, robotic bedside assisting, harvest and preparation of grafts, and cystoscopy; training will be provided by gender affirming surgeons. Communicates with patients about preoperative and postoperative care. May perform administrative support functions as required.


Essential Functions :

  • Monitors and evaluates medical condition of patient in collaboration with the physician and with other disciplines and standards of care or by applying appropriate protocols, and makes decisions regarding treatment changes. Refers patient to specialized services as needed. (20%)
  • Determines and assesses the health status of patients by reviewing records, taking comprehensive medical histories, and performing physical examinations. Orders and administers appropriate medications within limits of the appropriate statutory limitations or refers patient to a caregiver in a specialty area. Initiates, performs or directs other healthcare professionals to perform screenings and diagnostic tests (20%)
  • Completes required documentation legibly, thoroughly and in a timely manner. Prepares and maintains complete and accurate medical records (20%)
  • Participates in clinical education of healthcare students as seen fit by the supervising physician (10%)
  • May be assigned to be involved in clinical coordination or responsibility for special projects which may encompass protocol development, management planning, scheduling and other administrative tasks as necessary to support practice environment (10%)
  • Attends and participates in administrative staff meetings. Utilizes the principals and practices of effective communication to elicit information, negotiate problem resolution, and/or garner support for various programs or policies (10%)
  • Follows established departmental policies and procedures, quality improvement, safety, environmental and infection control standards (10%)
  • Provides surgical first assisting on genital gender affirming surgery cases and reconstructive urology cases

  • Education :

  • Master's Degree from an NP program accredited by the Commission on the Collegiate of Nursing Education (CCNE) or the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC), or successful completion of an Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) approved program (prior to January 2001 - Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs) Required

  • Work Experience :

  • 1-3 years related clinical experience preferred but not required.

  • Licenses :

  • PAC-Certified Physician Assistant - NCCPA - National Commission for Certifying Agencies Required and
  • BLS-Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) - AHA - American Heart Association Required

  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :

  • Knowledge of medical principals and procedures and community resources
  • Skills in eliciting history from patients, performing physical exams and formulating assessments of and treatment plans for patients.
  • Ordering appropriate diagnostic studies to aid in diagnosis.
  • Knowledge of appropriate prescribing of medications and other treatment options.
  • Other skills as deemed necessary by the supervising physician.
  • Skill in utilizing the principals and practices of effective and persuasive communication to elicit information, negotiate problem resolution, and/or garner support for various programs or policies.
  • Skill in obtaining information from patients, calming and reassuring patients and motivating patients to accept treatments.
  • Ability to respond appropriately in emergency situations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments and the public.
