We are seeking a talented individual to join our Global Client team at Mercer, a Marsh business. This role will be based in Tokyo, Japan.

Global Client Director Japan

The Global Client Director will be responsible for managing and expanding a portfolio of complex, key multinational clients based in Japan. This senior leadership role requires a strategic, client-centric professional who can build and sustain trusted relationships with C-suite executives and key stakeholders, drive sales and global revenue growth, and lead Mercer’s multidisciplinary teams to deliver innovative, tailored solutions that address clients’ people-related business challenges. The role demands a deep understanding of client industries, market trends and Mercer’s/ Marsh’s full suite of capabilities to maximize client satisfaction, profitability and long-term partnership value.

As a Global Client Director, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of Mercer’s client partnerships in Japan, driving impactful business outcomes and leading a talented global team. We will count on you to:

  • Build, maintain and deepen trusted relationships with key decision-makers and influencers, including C-suite executives, across Japanese-based multinational corporations. Act as the primary client advocate and trusted partner, ensuring Mercer’s (and where applicable Marsh’s) solutions align with client business strategies and needs.
  • Drive global revenue growth and profitability within the designated portfolio by developing and executing comprehensive 360° client management strategies. Identify and pursue new business opportunities, expand the mix of Mercer (and where applicable Marsh) products and services and meet agreed financial targets.
  • Lead the development and implementation of tailored account growth strategies based on thorough market, industry and client insights. Monitor account health, anticipate client needs and proactively address challenges to preserve and enhance client satisfaction and loyalty.
  • Manage, motivate and coordinate Mercer’s global client teams to deliver high-quality project outcomes, including leading global RFPs, project implementation and ongoing service delivery. Foster a collaborative environment that leverages Mercer’s global expertise to bring the best solutions to clients.
  • Provide expert advice and informed recommendations by leveraging Mercer’s (and where applicable Marsh’s) product knowledge and a comprehensive understanding of client needs. Ensure solutions are customized, compliant and aligned with Mercer’s business standards.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry trends, market dynamics and competitive landscape. Represent Mercer and Marsh at events and conferences to build a strong professional network, enhance Mercer’s brand presence and position the firm as a thought leader.
  • Uphold Mercer’s business and compliance standards in all client interactions and contractual agreements, ensuring advantageous terms for both the client and Mercer while institutionalizing long-term client relationships.
  • What you need to have:

  • Proven track record as a seasoned account and relationship manager with extensive hands-on experience managing the Japan market.
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in strategic account management and business development, consistently driving sales growth and revenue expansion.
  • Demonstrated success in managing complex, multinational client portfolios, with a strong preference for experience within the Japan market.
  • Strategic thinker and inspirational leader, adept at guiding cross-functional, global teams to deliver integrated, client-centric solutions.
  • Deep understanding of people-related business challenges, with the ability to translate client needs into actionable, value-driven solutions.
  • Exceptional ability to build and sustain influential relationships within a global environment, demonstrating strong gravitas and presence to engage senior stakeholders effectively.
  • Agile, resilient, and self-driven, with the capacity to work autonomously while maintaining close collaboration with Mercer’s broader global network.
  • Outstanding communication, negotiation, and presentation skills, with fluency in both English and Japanese.
  • Skilled at navigating complex organizational structures and managing multiple priorities with precision and professionalism.
  • Willingness to travel as needed to nurture client relationships and represent Mercer key industry events.
  • Tertiary qualification in Business, Finance, or a related discipline; postgraduate qualifications are highly desirable.
