Definition and Examples of Work



  • Builds small frame buildings, installs partitions, ceilings, doors, and locks.

  • Sets door frames, lays flooring, applies roofing and shingles, and hangs sheet rock.

  • Builds forms for concrete structures.

  • Makes cabinets, counters, bookcases, desks, screen doors, window sashes, bulletin boards, moldings, and other wooden articles.

  • Makes replacement pieces for the repair of furniture, restores antique furniture, repairs stairways, replaces siding, adjusts and repairs door closures.

  • Cuts holes for duct work and ventilators.

  • Performs skilled bench work in a carpenter shop operating power saws, planers, and other standard carpentry and cabinet making tools, and power driven woodworking equipment.

  • Pours concrete and does repair work to bridges.

  • Uses hand power tools, skid steers, hi loader and a variety of other light and heavy equipment.

  • Assigns and reviews work of semi-skilled carpenters and unskilled helpers.

  • Explains and demonstrates work procedures and methods.

  • Establishes work schedules and assigns and monitors work to meet production requirements when Highway Structures Foreman is unavailable.

  • Determines needs of structures shop materials and equipment when the Highway Structures Foreman is unavailable.

  • Directs the work activities of crews in the in the construction, repair and alteration of wooden, metal and concrete structures when the Highway Structures Foreman is unavailable.

  • Additional duties may be assigned as business needs require.

This position works independently and as part of a team, including providing input and problem solving with others to complete tasks. The position considerable latitude for determining materials and work methods used and is subject to inspection during progress and upon completion. The position delegates to others, provides coaching and training in a formal/informal manner, and is responsible for providing performance feedback. Negotiation and persuasion is used with internal/external customers and vendors. Decision making is typically done in independently in alignment with established procedures and policies. Successful completion of job tasks impacts operating costs, internal system, customer satisfaction, external company liability.


Work Environment

  • Primarily works outdoors, and may occasionally work in a shop or warehouse environment.

  • Primarily works outdoors in all weather conditions with exposure to high heat, cold, wind, dust, high humidity.

  • May frequently be exposed to moderate to loud noise, fumes, airborne particles, and chemicals; occasional exposure to chemicals.

  • May occasionally work in confined, enclosed spaces, or underground.

  • May occasionally work in high places, rooftops, and on overhead structures, requiring elevation above the ground.

  • Requires use of personal protective equipment as needed.


QUALIFICATION


Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities



  • Extensive knowledge of the standard practices, materials, and tools of the carpentry and concrete trade.

  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.

  • Ability to read a tape measure.

  • Skill in the use and operation of carpenter and concrete tools and machines.

  • Ability to operate hand and pneumatic tools and light and heavy construction equipment including skid steer, trucks, concrete mixer, forklift, mini excavator, power tools, skill saw, table saw, hand router, miter saw, band saw, pull behind air compressor, jack hammer (90, 60, 35-lb), etc.

  • Ability to operate computer, phone and general office equipment and peripherals.

  • Metal fabrication and Welding.

  • Ability to plan and supervise the work of the structures shop employees.

  • Ability to interpret and instruct others in the use of rough layouts, standard drawings, and specifications.

  • Ability to operate and instruct others in the operation of the tools and equipment used in the structures shop.

  • Ability to operate computer, phone and general office equipment and peripherals.


Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities



  • Forklift certification

  • Hauling certification

  • Lift truck training

  • Cement finishing

  • Sheetrock finishing

  • Framing and building forms

  • Wood working

  • Metal fabrication and welding


Required Education and Experience



  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Five years of experience in carpentry and concrete work at the journeyman level.


Certification, License, Registration



  • CDL Class A

  • CPR/First aid certified, preferred

  • Defensive Driving Course

  • Daily travel along the turnpike.

  • Occasional overtime.

  • On call for snow/ice removal.
