  • Nonprofit organization based in DMV seeking interim consultant to manage and lead its development team for a 12 week period.

    Company: Well-established, nationally recognized nonprofit educational organization providing challenging learning, self-esteem and team building programs.

    Hours/Schedule: 12-week engagement; estimate 30 to 40 hours per week; an extension may be considered by mutual agreement and performance.

    Job Description: Reports to Executive Director. Ensure development team remains aligned, supported, and equipped to meet 2026 fundraising goals while fostering trust, collaboration, and clarity across stakeholders. The interim period includes cultivation, grant management—particularly foundations in Washington, DC—and preparation for key donor engagement moments, including a key annual friend/fundraising event in May 2026. Organization will provide necessary access to the Development CRM (and training as needed), an organization email address for project-related work, and relevant policies/procedures. Responsibilites include:

  • Provide part-time interim leadership and line management to the Development team (4 staff members). Deliver weekly coaching and facilitate high-performing team meetings that build trust and clarity. Facilitate weekly team meetings and individual coaching sessions; establish weekly/ monthly activity goals aligned to 2026 development objectives and OKRs. (approx 8 hrs per week)
  • Stabilize and advance the DC foundations grant portfolio and priority major donor pipeline. Manage the DC foundations grant portfolio; organize deadlines, assign responsibilities, and improve submission quality. (approx 7 hrs per week)
  • Coordinate with Board, Development Committee, and Marketing/Communications for integrated support of high-priority donor activities and event readiness. (approx 3 hrs per week)
  • Embed reliable operating rhythms (goals, dashboards, CRM practices) to sustain momentum beyond the engagement. (approx 3 hrs per week)
  • Prioritize and advance top donor and prospect relationships; prepare briefing materials, strategies, and follow-up plans for Executive Director and Board members.
  • Foster a culture of trust, transparency, and accountability; model human-centered leadership practices.
  • Review CRM organization and ensure timely updates to records, tasks, and stewardship procedures for all donors.
  • Meet at least weekly with Executive Director to review revenue status, prospect progress, team performance, and any emerging issues.
  • Adhere to data protection, confidentiality, and ethical fundraising standards.
  • OUT OF SCOPE: This interim position will not make permanent staffing decisions or exercise hiring/firing authority nor serve as signatory on gift agreements or contracts.
  • Deliverables & Timeline for the 12-week engagement include:

  • Week 1: Kickoff plan outlining engagement approach, roles, operating rhythms, and success metrics; onboarding to CRM and key portfolios.
  • Weekly: Brief progress report and activity tracker (dashboard + narrative), highlighting wins, risks, and next-week priorities.
  • Week 6: Mid-engagement review with Executive Director; course-correct goals/approach as needed.
  • By Close: Final summary report with recommendations for sustaining progress; 30/60/90-day continuity plan; updated development plan/OKRs; prioritized portfolio with next actions; and a set of reusable templates (meeting briefs, grant tracker, stewardship plan).
  • Qualifications

  • Demonstrated success providing interim leadership and coaching to nonprofit development teams.
  • Expertise in fundraising strategy, portfolio management (major gifts and foundations), and development operations.
  • Strong facilitation, communication, and change management skills; human-centered leadership approach.
  • Experience coordinating Executive Director/Board engagement in donor cultivation and stewardship.
  • Proficiency with common nonprofit CRMs and data-driven management practices.
  • Knowledge of the Washington, DC foundation landscape is strongly preferred.
  • NOTE

  • Cover letter summarizing relevant experience and proposed level of effort.
  • Work plan and approach: outline operating rhythms, coaching model, and methods to achieve objectives.
  • Timeline: proposed weekly cadence and key checkpoints.
  • Budget: all-inclusive pricing (hourly rate and/or fixed fee), anticipated hours, and any travel costs.
  • Bio and resume.
  • References: at least two recent clients for similar engagements.
  • Sample deliverables: dashboards, trackers, or briefings (redacted as needed).
