Job Description
**Job Description Summary**
Design, build, and execute experimental systems to advance ultrasound-based industrial inspection solutions. Intern (Student pursuing Ph.D or Integrated Masters) will design, build, and execute experimental systems to advance ultrasound-based inspection solutions. As an individual contributor will own end-to-end test development—from solid mechanics modeling and fixture design through experimental validation and data analysis—working closely with cross-functional partners within Research team
**Job Description**
**Site Overview**
Established in 2000, the John F. Welch Technology Center (JFWTC) in Bengaluru is our multidisciplinary research and engineering center. Engineers and scientists at JFWTC have contributed to hundreds of aviation patents, pioneering breakthroughs in engine technologies, advanced materials, and additive manufacturing.
**Role Overview:**
+ Lead design and validation of mechanical fixtures and custom test equipment to support ultrasound inspection and material/structure evaluations.
+ Apply solid mechanics and ultrasound wave propagation principles to design experiments, interpret results, and recommend design/process changes. Develop 3D CAD models, detailed drawings, and specifications; collaborate with vendors for fabrication and rapid iteration.
+ Plan and execute structured experiments (DOE where appropriate); establish standard work, calibration methods, and measurement system analyses.
+ Build and instrument lab/bench test setups. Analyze test and ultrasound data; generate concise technical reports, visualizations, and recommendations for engineering and manufacturing stakeholders.
**Required Qualifications**
+ Strong foundation in solid mechanics and ultrasound wave propagation.
+ Hands-on experimental techniques, including test planning, instrumentation, and data acquisition.
+ Proven experience designing fixtures and custom test equipment.
+ Proficiency in 3D CAD (e.g., NX, Creo, SolidWorks) and creating manufacturable drawings.
**Desired Qualifications**
+ Knowledge of ultrasound inspection methods (e.g., bulk wave, guided wave, phased array, immersion/contact techniques).
+ Advanced data analysis skills and programming for prototyping/automation (e.g., Python/NumPy/Pandas, MATLAB, LabVIEW).
+ Experience with signal processing, feature extraction, and basic machine learning for inspection data.
+ Humble: respectful, receptive, agile, eager to learn
+ Transparent: shares critical information, speaks with candor, contributes constructively
+ Focused: quick learner, strategically prioritizes work, committed
+ Leadership ability: strong communicator, decision-maker, collaborative
+ Problem solver: analytical-minded, challenges existing processes, critical thinker.
