Kong Developer/Gateway Specialist

ROLE OVERVIEW

We are looking for an expert API Gateway Engineer to spearhead the foundational deployment and long-term governance of a robust Kong infrastructure within a critical infrastructure environment. This is a 'greenfield' opportunity requiring a specialist to architect a secure, scalable, and fully automated API management ecosystem from the ground up. In this pivotal role, you will bridge the gap between modern microservices and essential legacy backend architectures, ensuring high availability and seamless connectivity. You will be the technical lead for custom plugin development and the implementation of advanced security protocols necessary for high-governance systems.

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING

• Lead the end-to-end installation, 'step-up,' and environment configuration of the Kong platform .
• Design and refine Kong services, routing logic, upstream configurations, and high-performance caching strategies.
• Architect and develop bespoke Lua-based scripts and plugins to accommodate unique business logic and extension requirements.
• Implement enterprise-grade authentication and authorization frameworks, specifically leveraging OIDC, OAuth2, JWT, and RBAC.
• Engineer sophisticated traffic management policies, including intelligent load balancing, rate limiting, and request/response transformations.
• Drive a declarative configuration strategy using decK and integrate Gateway changes into existing CI/CD deployment pipelines.
• Facilitate reliable connectivity between the API gateway and a diverse ecosystem of microservices and established legacy systems.

MORE ABOUT YOU

• Extensive experience in the deployment, scaling, and management of Kong Gateway (Enterprise or Open Source).
• High proficiency in Lua scripts for custom plugin development and platform extension.
• Deep expertise in API security patterns, encryption standards, and integration with major Identity Providers.
• Hands-on experience with declarative configuration management via decK and modern automated deployment workflows.
• A proven history of delivering technical solutions within high-governance sectors such as Utilities, Banking, or Government.
