Key Responsibilities
- Administer, monitor, and support VAX and Open VMS environments in production and non-production systems
- Maintain and enhance applications written in VAX Pascal and related Open VMS languages
- Perform system upgrades, patching, performance tuning, and capacity planning
- Troubleshoot OS-level, application, batch, and interface issues
- Manage disk, tape, backup, restore, and disaster recovery operations
- Support interfaces between Open VMS and modern platforms (Linux, Windows, middleware, databases, APIs)
- Ensure high availability and data integrity of legacy platforms
- Maintain system documentation, runbooks, and operational procedures
- Support security, compliance, and audit requirements
- Participate in modernization, migration, and decommissioning programs where applicable
Technical Requirements
Core Skills
- Strong hands-on experience with:
- VAX systems
- Open VMS (VMS)
- VAX Pascal
- Experience with:
- DCL scripting
- RMS files
- Open VMS batch and scheduling
- System startup and shutdown procedures
- Knowledge of:
- Open VMS clustering
- Backup & recovery (e.g., BACKUP, tape libraries)
- Disk and volume management
- Performance monitoring and tuning in Open VMS
Nice to Have
- Experience integrating Open VMS with Linux, Windows, or cloud-based systems
- Knowledge of:
- C, Fortran, COBOL on VMS
- Databases on Open VMS (Rdb, Oracle, etc.)
- Exposure to legacy modernization or migration programs
- Experience in regulated or mission-critical environments (transport, defense, banking, utilities)
Experience & Background
- 8–15+ years of experience working with VAX / Open VMS platforms
- Proven experience supporting business-critical legacy systems
- Strong troubleshooting and root-cause analysis skills
- Experience working in production, 24×7, high-availability environments
Behavioral & Professional Skills
- Strong ownership mindset for critical platforms
- Ability to work with both legacy specialists and modern engineering teams
- Clear documentation and communication skills
- Comfortable working in environments where systems cannot fail
