The Mainframe DB2 Systems Programmer is responsible for the installation, configuration, maintenance, and optimization of DB2 for z/OS subsystems. This role provides expert-level system support, performance tuning, automation, and disaster recovery planning while collaborating closely with DBAs, system programmers, and application teams. Responsibilities:
DB2 Subsystem Management: Plan, prepare, and execute DB2 for z/OS subsystem installations, upgrades, and migrations. Apply IBM DB2 maintenance including PTFs, APARs, and SPEs using SMP/E. Configure and maintain DB2 PARMLIB, DSNZPARM, and initialization parameters. Perform DB2 subsystem restarts for maintenance and configuration changes. DB2 Tool and Utility Support: Install, configure, upgrade, and maintain IBM DB2 utilities. Support ISV DB2 tools used for administration, monitoring, and recovery. Troubleshoot issues related to DB2 utilities and third-party tools. Performance Monitoring and Tuning: Monitor DB2 subsystem health and resource utilization using performance tools. Analyze performance data and recommend tuning improvements. Assist DBAs and application teams with SQL and application performance optimization. Problem Diagnosis and Resolution: Provide expert support for DB2 incidents and problem determination. Analyze dumps, logs, and traces to identify root causes. Collaborate with IBM and ISV vendors on complex issues. Participate in on-call support rotation. Collaboration and Support: Work closely with DB2 DBAs to support database operations. Collaborate with z/OS Systems Programmers on shared resources and system issues. Coordinate with application teams and mainframe operations for changes and maintenance. Automation and Scripting: Develop and maintain JCL, REXX, CLISTs, and scripts for DB2 automation and monitoring. Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity: Assist with planning, testing, and execution of DB2 disaster recovery procedures. Ensure high availability and recoverability of DB2 environments. Documentation and Best Practices: Create and maintain documentation for DB2 configurations, procedures, and troubleshooting. Follow ITIL best practices for change, incident, and problem management. Security and Compliance: Implement DB2 security best practices in collaboration with security teams. Ensure compliance with internal policies and regulatory requirements. Required Skills and Experience: Extensive hands-on experience as a Mainframe DB2 Systems Programmer. Strong expertise in DB2 for z/OS installation, configuration, maintenance, and migration. Proficiency in JCL, TSO/ISPF, and SMP/E. Experience with IBM DB2 utilities and ISV DB2 tools. Solid understanding of DB2 architecture, data sharing, buffer pools, and logging. Experience with DB2 performance tuning and problem determination. Ability to analyze DB2 dumps and traces. Proficiency in scripting for automation. Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and communication skills. Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities. Desired Skills and Experience: Experience with Parallel Sysplex and DB2 Data Sharing. Knowledge of DB2 integration with CICS, IMS, or IBM MQ. Experience with DB2 DDF and distributed connectivity. Relevant DB2 for z/OS certifications preferred.
