Job Description: The Mainframe z/OS Systems Programmer is responsible for the installation, upgrade, maintenance, and optimization of the z/OS operating system and associated ISV products. This role ensures system stability, performance, security, and high availability while supporting critical business workloads. Responsibilities: z/OS Upgrades and Maintenance:
Plan, prepare, and execute z/OS operating system upgrades, including pre-installation checks, customization, testing, and post-upgrade validation. Apply IBM PTFs and APARs using SMP/E to maintain system integrity and resolve issues. Perform regular IPLs and system restarts as required. Monitor system health, performance, and resource utilization using RMF, SMF, Omegamon, and related tools. ISV Product Management: Install, configure, upgrade, and maintain ISV products across security, performance monitoring, scheduling, storage management, databases, and utilities. Ensure compatibility and smooth integration of ISV products within the z/OS environment. Coordinate with vendors for licensing, technical support, and problem resolution. System Maintenance and Support: Perform system reconfigurations and PARMLIB updates. Manage critical system datasets such as SYSRES, page datasets, and SMF datasets. Provide expert-level incident support, including problem determination and resolution. Participate in on-call rotation to support critical systems. Performance Tuning and Optimization: Analyze performance metrics to identify bottlenecks and improvement opportunities. Tune z/OS components, WLM, and ISV products to optimize system and application performance. Automation and Scripting: Develop and maintain REXX, JCL, and automation scripts for system administration and monitoring. Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity: Participate in disaster recovery planning, testing, and execution. Ensure high availability and recoverability of mainframe systems. Documentation and Best Practices: Create and maintain system documentation including installation guides, configurations, procedures, and troubleshooting references. Follow ITIL best practices for change, incident, and problem management. Collaboration and Mentorship: Work closely with application teams, DBAs, operations, and infrastructure groups. Mentor junior systems programmers and promote knowledge sharing. Security and Compliance: Implement and enforce z/OS and ISV security best practices. Ensure compliance with internal policies and regulatory requirements. Required Skills and Experience: Extensive hands-on experience as a Mainframe Systems Programmer. Strong expertise in z/OS installation, configuration, maintenance, and upgrades. Proven experience executing major z/OS version upgrades. Proficiency in JCL, TSO/ISPF, SMP/E, JES2/JES3. Hands-on experience supporting ISV products across security, monitoring, scheduling, storage, database, and utility domains. Solid understanding of mainframe networking including TCP/IP and VTAM. Experience with performance tuning, capacity planning, and automation. Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and communication skills. Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment. Desired Skills and Experience: Experience with Parallel Sysplex environments. Knowledge of z/VM or Linux on Z. Exposure to mainframe modernization or hybrid cloud initiatives. Relevant z/OS or mainframe technology certifications preferred.
