Job Description

Role Overview

The Garment Technologist is responsible for ensuring that all products meet the required standards of quality, fit, and performance for online retail. The role serves as a critical link between the Design, Buying, and Sourcing teams—translating creative concepts into technically accurate, production-ready garments while upholding brand expectations related to quality, sustainability, and cost efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

1. Product Development & Sampling

  • Collaborate closely with Design and Sourcing teams to develop product specifications, size sets, and spec sheets within Terra and Octa (PLM for Styli).
  • Prepare specification sheets based on the design team’s tech packs and share them with vendors for fit and pre-production samples.
  • Review prototype samples for construction, measurements, and workmanship, and provide precise, actionable feedback for improvement.
  • Conduct fit sessions using models or mannequins and finalize fit approvals for bulk production.
  • Ensure fit, measurement, and finish consistency across all product categories.

2. Technical Specifications

  • Approve pre-production and production samples in accordance with brand standards.
  • Standardize size charts and grading rules, leveraging customer body data and online returns analysis.
  • Recommend suitable fabrics based on the design tech pack and product requirements.

3. Quality Assurance

  • Establish and implement quality standards for materials and finished garments appropriate for e-commerce, including appearance, packaging, and durability.
  • Assess fabric performance, shrinkage, colorfastness, and wash standards.
  • Work collaboratively with QA/QC teams and vendors to resolve technical issues and reduce defect rates.
  • Support third-party testing and compliance processes as required by the brand.

4. Vendor & Production Support

  • Provide technical guidance to factories and vendors throughout sample development and bulk production.
  • Evaluate vendor capability and capacity for relevant product categories.
  • Ensure timely approvals and production readiness in alignment with online launch timelines.

5. Data & Digital Readiness

  • Support digital product creation (DPC) by supplying accurate specification data for 3D sampling or virtual try-ons using Clo3D and other digital tools as implemented.
  • Analyze online returns, customer feedback, and product reviews to drive continuous improvement in fit, quality, and performance.

Key Skills & Competencies

  • Strong understanding of garment construction, pattern making, and grading.
  • Expertise in fabrics, trims, and wash techniques.
  • Advanced knowledge of fit standards, measurement accuracy, and pattern adjustments.
  • Proficiency in PLM systems, Excel, and digital technologies such as CLO3D and Lectra.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with Design, Buying, and Sourcing teams.
  • Highly detail-oriented with a hands-on, analytical, and problem-solving mindset.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Fashion Technology, Apparel Design, or Textile Engineering, with specialization in pattern making and grading.
  • 8–12 years of experience in garment technology, preferably within e-commerce or fast-fashion environments.
  • Experience across women’s western wear, men’s wear, and/or kidswear categories.
  • Familiarity with online product requirements and fit accuracy standards for digital shoppers.
