Position description:
The Risk Management Manager oversees all P&I and H&M claims, incident analysis, and risk prevention across the OSS-managed fleet. This position integrates marine standards compliance and risk management to minimize operational losses, ensure timely claim resolution, and enhance safety and environmental performance. The role also manages statutory trading documents (e.g., COFR, VGP, NPDES, Ballast Water) to support port compliance and operational readiness.
Roles and Responsibilities
Marine Standards & Compliance
Uphold and promote the companyβs Health, Safety, Environmental Protection, and Quality Policy, ensuring compliance with ISM Code and ISO 9001/14001/45001 standards.
Maintain alignment with international and national maritime requirements (SOLAS, MARPOL, ISM, ISPS, MLC 2006).
Liaise with flag administrations, port authorities, and classification societies to ensure audit and certification compliance.
Monitor and communicate changes in safety and environmental regulations affecting OSS-managed vessels.
Participate in internal audits, external audits, and inspections to maintain high operational and compliance standards.
Insurance and Claims Management
Manage all P&I and H&M claims β including crew injury/sickness, hull damage, collision, pollution, and other marine incidents.
Liaise with P&I Clubs, H&M underwriters, brokers, correspondents, surveyors, and legal advisers.
Ensure timely claim reporting, documentation, and closure with complete traceability.
Analyze claim trends and recommend preventive measures to reduce recurrence.
Support renewal reviews and ensure effective insurance coverage across the fleet.
Incident Investigation & Risk Analysis
Lead or assist in incident investigations and root cause analysis.
Compile and review incident data to identify risk trends and financial exposure.
Develop and present periodic risk reports and preventive recommendations to management.
Coordinate corrective actions with technical, crewing, and operations teams.
Risk Management & Prevention
Maintain a comprehensive risk register and apply a risk-based approach to audits and inspections.
Integrate claim and operational data into risk dashboards and KPIs.
Promote a culture of loss prevention and safety awareness through communication and training.
Compliance and Documentation
Maintain and update all statutory trading documents (COFR, VGP, Ballast Water, OPA-90, NTVRP, CANT, SMFF/VRP, PCSOPEP).
Track expiry and renewal of certificates and filings to prevent operational delays.
Liaise with authorities and service providers to ensure full regulatory compliance.
Proven senior management experience in a competitive shipping environment in a ship owning or third-party ship management company.
Strong knowledge of P&I and H&M claims handling, ISM Code, ISO standards, and maritime conventions.
Strong technical and documentation skills, including the development and implementation of documents and procedures, emergency response documents, plans, and procedures.
Strong verbal and written communication skills, and proficient writing style
Class 1 Certificate β Master Mariner
Able to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (including Outlook, Word, Power Point, and Excel)
Experience in environmental compliance programs (COFR, VGP).
Familiarity with insurance renewals and underwriter liaison.
Competence in data analysis or risk visualization tools.
Regular international travel is required and may be on short notice.
Must have mobility to conduct vessel inspections.
Availability via a mobile device outside of office hours
Must maintain home internet connection for work outside of office hours.
