Overview

As a Microsoft Purview & Data Governance Specialist , you will play a critical role in designing, implementing, and scaling enterprise-grade data governance capabilities across complex Azure and hybrid environments. You will help organizations gain visibility, control, and trust in their data while ensuring compliance with regional regulations and global best practices. You will act as a bridge between technical, business, and compliance teams, enabling sustainable data governance adoption and measurable impact across the organization.

Responsibilities

Your Impact:

  • Implement and operationalize Microsoft Purview components, including:

    • Data Map, Data Catalog, and Data Assets

    • Sensitivity labels, classification, and automated metadata tagging

    • End-to-end data lineage setup and monitoring

    • Access governance using RBAC, collections, and policies

  • Integrate Purview with Azure services, Microsoft 365, Power BI, SQL, SAP , and hybrid/on‑prem environments.

  • Define scanning strategies, metadata ingestion processes, and classification rules aligned with enterprise standards.

  • Design and execute data governance frameworks aligned with DAMA / DG best practices .

  • Support the definition of data ownership models , including Data Owners and Data Stewards.

  • Establish and enforce policies related to data quality, metadata management, retention, and protection.

  • Conduct governance maturity assessments and propose roadmap improvements.

  • Partner with business, compliance, and technical stakeholders to assess data risks and governance needs.

  • Provide guidance on LATAM data regulations (Habeas Data, LGPD, and related frameworks).

  • Lead workshops, training sessions, and adoption initiatives to drive governance and Purview usage.

  • Define governance and quality KPIs, and build dashboards for lineage visibility, scanning coverage, and risk exposure.

  • Support audit readiness and regulatory reporting aligned with regional compliance requirements.

Qualifications

Your Skills and Experience

  • 8+ years of experience in Azure data engineering, data governance, or related roles.

  • Hands‑on expertise with:

    • Microsoft Purview

    • Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse, Azure Data Lake

    • Azure Active Directory (RBAC, PIM)

    • Power BI governance and Admin portal

  • Strong understanding of:

    • Metadata management and data catalogs

    • Data lineage concepts and implementation

    • Data quality principles and governance metrics

    • Data security, privacy, and protection architectures

  • Proven experience working in enterprise or regulated environments .

  • Strong communication skills to engage technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • Experience collaborating across compliance, legal, and business teams.

Set Yourself Apart With

  • Experience implementing governance solutions in hybrid or multi-source environments.

  • Familiarity with DAMA-DMBOK or other formal data governance frameworks.

  • Knowledge of automation and scripting using PowerShell, Python, or Azure DevOps.

  • Experience supporting audit processes and regulatory reporting.

  • Exposure to LATAM-wide data governance challenges across multiple countries.

  • Strong facilitation skills for workshops and governance adoption programs.

This is a full-time, fully remote contractor position for an initial 6‑month engagement, with the possibility of extension based on project needs.
