Job Summary
We are seeking a highly technical Palo Alto Firewall Engineer. This role focuses on bringing firewall equipment online, configuring and tuning Palo Alto firewalls, and actively monitoring traffic flows to ensure that only explicitly approved, precise traffic is allowed. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, security-driven, and comfortable working directly in PAN-OS to analyze, tighten, and optimize firewall rules.
Key Responsibilities
- Bring Palo Alto firewall equipment online, including initial setup, licensing, and upgrades
- Perform hands-on configuration of Palo Alto firewalls using PAN-OS (GUI and CLI)
- Design, implement, and maintain security policies
- Monitor traffic flows and logs to understand application and network behavior
- Analyze allowed traffic and tighten firewall rules to eliminate overly broad access
- Transition rules from “any/any” to precise, application- and service-specific policies
- Implement and tune App-ID, Content-ID, and security profiles
- Review, clean up, and optimize existing firewall rule sets
- Troubleshoot traffic flow issues and policy enforcement at Layers 3–7
- Work closely with network and security teams to validate required traffic and block everything else
- Document configurations, traffic findings, and rule changes
Required Skills & Experience
- 3+ years of hands-on Palo Alto Networks firewall experience
- Demonstrated experience bringing new firewall equipment online from scratch
- Strong experience configuring and tuning security policies in PAN-OS
- Proven ability to monitor traffic logs and flow data to drive rule refinement
- Deep understanding of network protocols, applications, and firewall behavior
- Comfortable working directly in the firewall daily (GUI and CLI)
- Experience enforcing least-privilege and zero-trust principles
Preferred Qualifications
- Palo Alto certifications (PCNSA, PCNSE)
- Experience with Panorama
- Experience in high-security or regulated environments
- Familiarity with compliance and security best practices
