Summary Statement


The City of Boise's Department of Planning and Development Services (PDS) guides the physical growth and development of the city. From long-range planning and housing policy to zoning administration and historic preservation, PDS plays a central role in shaping how Boise grows and functions. The department’s work spans planning policy, urban design, mobility, community development, zoning compliance, and customer intake services.

PDS is seeking a Planning Data Intern for the Spring and Summer semesters to support planning administration functions. Interns will assist with organizing, maintaining, and analyzing planning and intake data that supports day-to-day operations, reporting, and policy analysis.

Primary responsibilities may include data entry and quality control, tracking application and permitting activity, compiling summaries for staff use, and assisting with the creation of basic reports and visualizations using tools such as Microsoft Excel and Power BI. Each intern will be assigned a defined project or deliverable to complete by the end of the semester. Interns may also have opportunities to observe planning processes and support related projects across the department.

Successful candidates will be detail-oriented, self-motivated, and dependable, with an interest in planning, public administration, or local government operations. Familiarity with spreadsheets, data organization, or basic data visualization is preferred. Experience with GIS, mapping, or graphic design is a plus but not required. Students pursuing coursework in Urban Studies, Planning, Public Administration, or related fields are strongly encouraged to apply.
This will be a temporary 19/hour per week job - Tentative start date is the week of May 18th, running through mid-August.


Requirements


Undergraduate or Graduate student (degree-seeking) enrolled in an Idaho college or university.

Proficiency in MS Office products including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Access

Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Ability to work independently with general guidelines under minimal supervision
