Job Description

Join an iconic Australian brand on an electrifying greenfield project. Our client is constructing the Enterprise AI Workbench, a unified, secure, and highly scalable platform that will be the central nervous system for all Machine Learning (ML) model and Large Language Model (LLM) prompt development across the entire business.

This isn't an iterative improvement; it's a foundational build. You will be the technical lead, getting your hands dirty and setting the engineering standard for how this company does AI.

Tech Stack Highlights:

We're all-in on AWS, leveraging services like SageMaker, Bedrock, S3, Teradata, and RDS (Oracle). The focus is on seamless data access, reproducibility, and adhering to strict enterprise data governance and security standards.

Responsibilities:

1. Hands-On Platform Delivery & Execution

  • Lead the Build: You will personally lead the hands-on design, build, and operationalisation of the entire AI Workbench platform. This is a coding/building role-less whiteboard, more keyboard.
  • Define the Standard: Establish platform engineering patterns, reusable templates, and developer experience tooling that will scale across a large, complex organisation.
  • Drive the Roadmap: Ensure the platform hits production-readiness by the end of June 2025, with iterative, capability-expanding monthly releases starting in February.

2. Technical Leadership & Mentorship

  • Architectural Vision: Translate high-level strategic requirements into detailed technical designs, implementation plans, and actionable backlog items.
  • Cloud Integration: Provide technical expertise on integrating cloud-native services (AWS ecosystem) to create seamless data, development, and deployment workflows.
  • Team Uplift: Partner with and mentor a cross-functional team, including a Solution Architect (newer to the AI/ML domain), Cloud Engineer, and Data Platform Engineer, fostering engineering excellence.

3. Adoption & Operational Excellence

  • Enablement: Facilitate the transition of data science teams from disparate, laptop-based workflows to the secure, centralised enterprise platform.
  • Optimisation: Define platform SLAs, establish performance metrics, and implement cost optimisation strategies to guarantee platform reliability and efficiency.

Requirements:

  • Experience: 10+ years designing, building, and operating scalable Data and AI/ML platforms in large enterprises, with a verifiable track record of technical leadership.
  • Cloud Native Mastery: Expert-level proficiency in AWS infrastructure, including services like SageMaker, Bedrock, S3, IAM, and related DevOps tooling.
  • Automation: Non-negotiable hands-on experience with Infrastructure-as-Code (e.g., Terraform, CloudFormation) and robust CI/CD pipelines.
  • Security Focus: Demonstrated success implementing secure, governed, and cost-optimised platforms with a deep understanding of enterprise access control and monitoring frameworks.
  • Greenfield Grit: Experience establishing platform engineering practices in nascent or new AI/ML initiatives.
  • Leadership/Delivery Balance: The ability to provide clear technical direction while maintaining a heavy, hands-on delivery focus within a small, focused team.
  • Bonus Points: Familiarity with prompt engineering, LLM orchestration, and the rapidly evolving GenAI tooling ecosystem. AWS or MLOps certifications are welcome, but results matter more.

This is a rare opportunity to lay the technical foundation for an enterprise-wide AI strategy. If you're ready to build the engine rather than just drive the car, we want to hear from you.

This role is a full time day rate contracting role based out of Sydney working 2-3 days in the office. The role will be starting as soon as possible finishing up in line with the financial year on June 30th 2026 with opportunity for ongoing extension. Please note only candidates with full working rights in Australia, Citizenship or Permanent Residency will be considered for this role.
