Principal Engineer, Data – Data Ops (L07)

About the Role:

The Principal Engineer, Data – Data Operations provides technical leadership and strategic direction for enterprise data engineering initiatives within T-Mobile’s Data Operations Center of Excellence. This role blends deep hands-on expertise, architectural ownership, and people leadership to ensure scalable, secure, and governed data platforms. The Principal Engineer drives operational reliability, compliance, and innovation across platforms like Snowflake, Databricks, and Azure, and champions a culture of collaboration, accountability, and technical depth.

What You’ll Do:

• Define and enforce enterprise data engineering and architecture standards for Data Ops and CoE
• Oversee critical pipeline design, delivery, and quality for operational reliability and compliance
• Provide hands-on guidance for SQL frameworks, optimization, and automation
• Mentor senior engineers and engineering managers, fostering a collaborative and accountable team culture
• Lead cross-functional initiatives across data, governance, and security, ensuring SOX and cybersecurity compliance
• Drive adoption of modern architectures, self-service analytics, and operational excellence
• Influence long-term platform strategy, intake processes, and continuous improvement

What You’ll Bring:

• 10–12 years delivering cloud-based data solutions and leading data engineering teams
• Proven enterprise technical leadership in data operations or analytics environments
• Strong communication and influence-driven leadership skills
• Experience with compliance, governance, and operational reliability

Must Have Skills:

• Enterprise-scale data architecture and database design for Data Ops platforms
• SQL framework standardization, performance optimization, and automation
• Cloud-native data platforms (Azure, Databricks, Snowflake) and services
• Leadership across distributed or global teams, fostering accountability and technical depth

Nice to Have:

• Data governance, privacy, and regulatory compliance
• Lakehouse and modern warehousing architectures
• Strong executive communication skills
• Cloud certifications
