This is a principal-level platform automation role focused on database infrastructure, not a DevOps or DBA position.
Principal Platform Automation Architect (Data & SQL Platforms)
Principal Database Automation Engineer
Location: Sydney (Hybrid)
Salary: $190,000 + super + bonus

We are seeking a Principal Platform Automation Engineer to lead the design and delivery of enterprise-grade automation across database and infrastructure platforms within a large, regulated environment.
This is a principal-level platform role, requiring deep expertise across DevOps automation, Infrastructure-as-Code, and SQL platform engineering, combined with strong architectural thinking and technical leadership.

What you’ll be responsible for

• Owning the automation strategy for database and infrastructure platforms across hybrid (on-prem and cloud) environments
• Designing and delivering true automation at scale, using Infrastructure-as-Code and CI/CD pipelines
• Building and operating enterprise SQL platforms (MSSQL and/or PostgreSQL) with a focus on availability, resilience, and performance
• Defining reusable platform patterns and standards to enable safe self-service for engineering teams
• Leading and optimising DevOps toolchains (CI/CD platforms), not just consuming them
• Providing architectural guidance and technical leadership across multiple teams
• Mentoring senior engineers and influencing platform standards
• Ensuring automation and platforms meet security, compliance, and regulatory requirements

What you’ll bring
Platform Automation & DevOps

• Proven experience delivering end-to-end automation, not script-based execution
• Deep hands-on expertise with Terraform, Ansible, and ARM templates
• Strong experience designing and owning CI/CD platforms (Azure DevOps, Jenkins, Bitbucket, Artifactory)

Cloud & Hybrid Engineering

• Strong Microsoft Azure experience (essential)
• Comfortable supporting on-prem and hybrid environments
• AWS experience beneficial

SQL Platform Engineering

• Strong experience with MSSQL and/or PostgreSQL at a platform level
• Expertise in HA/DR, performance tuning, reliability, and lifecycle automation

Container Platforms

• Experience with Kubernetes and/or OpenShift, particularly around deployment and lifecycle management
• Security & Enterprise Experience
• Strong understanding of RBAC, Privileged Access Management, encryption, and secure provisioning
• Experience working in large, regulated enterprise environments

Leadership & architecture (critical)

• Strong architectural design capability and the ability to articulate technical decisions clearly
• Experience influencing platform standards across multiple teams
• Ability to mentor senior engineers while remaining hands-on
