**Our Company**
At Teradata, we believe that people thrive when empowered with better information. That’s why we built the most complete cloud analytics and data platform for AI. By delivering harmonized data, trusted AI, and faster innovation, we uplift and empower our customers—and our customers’ customers—to make better, more confident decisions. The world’s top companies across every major industry trust Teradata to improve business performance, enrich customer experiences, and fully integrate data across the enterprise.
**What You’ll Do**
Teradata is launching a new Product Counsel function, providing an incredible opportunity for a business minded lawyer who is deeply curious about AI and looking to make a real impact. As the primary legal advisor for Teradata’s product and engineering teams, Product Counsel will guide the development, launch, and lifecycle management of innovative technology products. This role is pivotal in ensuring regulatory compliance, managing legal risk, and protecting Teradata’s intellectual property, while enabling business growth and product excellence. Success in this role looks like being embedded early in product decision-making, anticipating legal and regulatory issues before they become blockers, and enabling teams to ship compliant, differentiated products and services agilely.
**Key Responsibilities include:**
+ **Legal Guidance & Compliance**
+ Partner with business on feature design, go-to-market decisions, and product risk tradeoffs, including advising on when and how to proceed in the face of legal uncertainty
+ Advise product, engineering, and business teams on legal issues throughout the product lifecycle—from ideation to launch and beyond.
+ Ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations, including AI, privacy, ESG, and intellectual property.
+ Draft and negotiate commercial, technology, and IP agreements affecting Teradata’s products and services.
+ **Risk Management**
+ Conduct risk assessments and develop proactive mitigation strategies for product-related legal risks.
+ Monitor and enforce intellectual property rights, including patents, trademarks, and copyrights.
+ **Cross-Functional Collaboration**
+ Act as a bridge between product, legal, compliance, and business teams to drive alignment and resolve complex issues.
+ Lead coordination for cross-functional projects, including product launches and regulatory reviews.
+ **Policy & Documentation**
+ Draft terms of use, product policies, disclosures, and implement related processes.
+ Provide clear, actionable guidance to product teams and translate legal advice into practical business solutions.
+ **Strategic Business Partner**
+ Stay current on industry trends, regulatory developments, and emerging risks in technology and data analytics.
+ Advise on new product directions, market entry, and strategic initiatives.
**Who You’ll Work With**
Sitting at the intersection of innovation and integrity, Teradata’s Product Counsel will serve as a bridge between Teradata’s law and product engineering organizations. You will collaborate closely with product teams and leaders of other legal functions – including our compliance, commercial, and IP teams. In this role, you will report directly to the Vice President of Law, Chief Privacy, Ethics & Compliance Counsel. At Teradata, we place high value on the well-being of our legal professionals and foster a culture that supports a healthy work/life balance.
**What Makes You a Qualified Candidate**
+ JD or international legal qualification and licensed to practice law.
+ Sufficient technical fluency to engage deeply with engineering and product teams, understand system architecture and data flows at a conceptual level, and meaningfully advise on technical tradeoffs
+ 12+ years of relevant experience (prior engineering or product development experience combined with law firm or in house experience ideal), with a focus on technology, privacy, or product counseling and a deep understanding of product development, technology law, and regulatory frameworks.
+ Demonstrated ability to manage complex projects, prioritize tasks, and work effectively in cross-functional teams.
+ Excellent negotiation, drafting, and communication skills.
+ Strong business judgment, intellectual creativity, and problem-solving ability.
**What You’ll Bring**
+ In-house experience at a technology company, with significant transactional and product counseling experience.
+ Familiarity with and experience advising on key legal and regulatory frameworks relevant to AI products and systems, as well as general privacy regulations and how they apply to tech products (e.g., GDPR, CPRA, EU AI Act, Open Source)
+ A well-grounded knowledge of intellectual property law.
+ Sound and practical business judgment in counseling clients and throughout your work.
+ Ability to organize, prioritize, and manage a high-volume workload in a fast-paced and demanding work environment and have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
