Broadcom’s Mainframe Software Division (MSD) is looking for a talented and motivated Software Engineer, with experience working with mainframe systems and applications. In this role, you will be a key member of the Mainframe DevOps development team, focusing on building, enhancing, testing, and supporting Gen (COOL: Gen).

The Opportunity

As an R&D Software Engineer 2, you will maintain and enhance a product named Gen (formerly known as COOL: Gen). Gen is a low-code model-driven development environment for enterprise applications. Gen enables global businesses to generate and deploy applications in a single, integrated development environment for multiple platforms. 

In this role, you will maintain and enhance Gen’s sophisticated architecture in order to deliver new value while retaining the reliability customers have counted on for 40 years. You will apply your existing base knowledge of mainframe systems and code to a broad expanse of Gen functionality, thus resulting in the rapid growth of skills that only hands-on experience can offer you. Foundational to your success will be collaboration with other engineers and stakeholders, such as customers, support and service teams, product management, solution architects, etc.

What You’ll Do

  • Implement changes to maintain Gen’s compatibility with supported 3rd party products, like IBM mainframe hardware and software. 

  • Contribute to quality assurance by participating in design/code/test plan reviews, test environment and data preparation, and test execution to deliver high quality software solutions.

  • Troubleshoot and fix defects from customer cases that have been escalated to engineering. 

  • Research and develop software solutions to enhance Gen’s capabilities to deliver new value to customers.

  • Learn new skills and technologies, with a focus on mainframe software and systems, and a cross-section of distributed systems and DevOps tools. 

  • What You Need

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in software development.

  • BA/BS in Computer Science or equivalent degree.

  • Skilled in coding in at least two of the following: COBOL, C, C++, Java, IBM Assembler, PL/I

  • Experience with zOS systems components and sub-systems such as: z/OS Language Environment (LE), ISPF, CICS, IMS, WebSphere Liberty, and DB2.

  • Experience working with middleware, such as ECI, TCP/IP or IBM MQ. 

  • Additional skills that will benefit your efforts

  • Experience using Gen ( COOL: Gen).

  • Earning the IBM zXplore certificates (Fundamentals and Advanced)

  • Experience with z/OSMF, SMP/E, and IPCS.

  • Experience with Source Code Management tools, such as Endevor and GitHub.

  • Using VS Code extensions, like those for Code4z. 

  • Ability to install CICS and IMS, define resources and set up the environment, and write sample programs.

  • Understand object oriented programming and interlanguage communications.

  • Reading system dumps, using various debugging tools, performance tuning.

    Compensation and Benefits

    The annual base salary range for this position is $73,000 - $117,000 

    This position is also eligible for a discretionary annual bonus in accordance with relevant plan documents, and equity in accordance with equity plan documents and equity award agreements.
