**Job Description**
The Department of Radiation Oncology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center is advancing the imaging and radiation methods of the future. Research efforts focus on improving the precision and effectiveness of radiation therapy through innovative treatment techniques and clinical outcomes research.
This internship supports clinical cancer outcomes research at the intersection of oncology and cardiology (cardio-oncology), with a particular emphasis on understanding the cardiovascular effects of cancer therapies such as radiation treatment.
**Role Summary**
Under the mentorship of a physician-scientist, the intern will gain hands-on experience in clinical research focused on cardio-oncology. The role provides exposure to patient data collection, radiation treatment planning concepts, and clinical outcomes analysis within a state-of-the-art academic medical center.
The intern will develop foundational research skills, participate in data analysis, and contribute to scientific communication through presentations and poster development.
**Learning Objectives**
The internship is designed to enable the intern to:
1. Gain introductory knowledge of cardio-oncology and clinical cancer research principles.
2. Understand patient data collection methods for clinical research.
3. Learn to review and extract clinical and radiation therapy data from electronic systems.
4. Analyze relationships between radiation dose metrics and cardiovascular outcomes.
5. Work alongside experienced clinicians and researchers in an academic research environment.
6. Participate in campus-wide academic activities, seminars, and networking opportunities.
**Primary Responsibilities**
+ Review research background and study objectives with mentor
+ Participate in research planning, preparation, execution, and evaluation
+ Conduct chart reviews and collect patient clinical data
+ Extract radiation dose information from treatment planning systems
+ Perform literature reviews to support research aims
+ Analyze and interpret clinical data
+ Prepare data summaries, presentations, and research posters
+ Communicate findings effectively through oral and written formats
**Role Activities & Timeline** **
1. Introduction and Orientation**
+ Introductory meetings to review research goals and cardio-oncology concepts
+ Training in electronic medical record navigation and PHI compliance
+ Orientation to radiation treatment planning systems and radiation dose metrics

2. Foundation Building**
+ Systematic data collection from patient records (cardiovascular risk factors and cancer treatment details)
+ Progressive independence in data extraction and organization
+ Learning to extract radiation dose information for cardiac substructures
**
3. Skill Development and Analysis**
+ Analyze relationships between radiation dose metrics and cardiovascular outcomes
+ Participate in weekly research team meetings
+ Prepare preliminary data summaries and analyses
+ Develop scientific communication skills through presentation practice
**
4. Independent Research and Project Development**
+ Conduct independent data analysis and interpretation
+ Participate in advanced research activities with minimal supervision
+ Develop research posters and presentation materials
+ Engage in healthcare workforce or related research projects, as appropriate
**Ongoing Activities**
+ Weekly one-on-one check-ins with supervisor
+ Weekly team meetings with literature updates and preliminary findings
+ Participation in academic seminars, lecture series, and student networking forums
+ Continuous training in real-world healthcare data management and analysis
**Systems Access & Training**
The intern will be trained on and utilize the following systems:
+ CS-Link (electronic health record)
+ REDCap (data entry and management)
+ Eclipse and MOSAIQ (radiation treatment planning systems)
+ ARIA
+ WebBridge
**Additional Information**
+ The intern will **not** work with biological specimens or samples
+ The intern **will work with Protected Health Information (PHI)** during primary data collection
+ All PHI access will occur on Cedars-Sinai–issued computers
+ Comprehensive training will be provided on PHI regulations and data security requirements
**Qualifications**
This role is designed to be 100% onsite, giving you the opportunity to collaborate closely with your team and immerse yourself in the energy of our workplace. Please note that hybrid or remote work options are NOT available for this position at this time.
**Required Education & Experience**
+ Must be 18 years of age or older.
+ Must have a HS Diploma or GED.
+ Must reside in the greater Los Angeles area or surrounding cities while conducting all activities related to the intern or visitor appointment.
+ INTERNS: Those participating for academic credit must receive academic credit for the duration of the internship.
+ VISITORS: Must be receiving funding from an eligible sponsoring institution (employer, educator, funder, etc.).
