We are looking for…

- A senior backend engineer with strong Java and Spring Boot expertise, who can design and optimize complex distributed systems.

- Someone with deep Camunda/CIB7 knowledge and a process-oriented mindset, able to drive workflow automation at scale.

- A collaborative technical leader who mentors engineers, influences architecture, and ensures reliability and scalability.

This role matters to us…

As Senior Backend Engineer you will contribute to, METRO’s global Quality Management System, which harmonizes and streamlines quality assurance processes across countries and stores. Camunda is at the foundation — enabling complex workflows and business process integrity. In this role you will be guiding the technical direction and mentoring other engineers.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, implement, and maintain scalable backend services and APIs (RESTful and event-driven).
• Act as technical lead for backend development, guiding design and architecture decisions.
• Mentor and support mid-level engineers, ensuring knowledge sharing and technical excellence.
• Ensure performance, reliability, and security across backend systems.
• Collaborate with architects, frontend engineers, QA, and product managers to deliver integrated solutions.
• Monitor and troubleshoot production systems, ensuring system stability and continuous improvement.
• Contribute to long-term technical strategy and innovation in workflow automation and backend architecture.

Qualifications

Education

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.

Work Experience & Skills

• Extensive hands-on experience with Java and Spring Boot.
• Proven experience with Camunda; familiarity with CIB7 is highly desirable and a strong plus.
• Strong knowledge of microservices architecture and API-first design principles.
• Experience with relational and NoSQL databases (PostgreSQL, MongoDB).
• Proficiency in automated testing (unit, integration, component, contract).
• Hands-on experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, Jenkins, or similar).
• Experience designing scalable, secure, and reliable distributed systems.
• Excellent English communication skills (written and spoken), with ability to engage both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

• Leadership and mentoring skills; proven experience guiding engineering teams.
• Ability to balance short-term delivery needs with long-term system health.

Nice-to-Have

• Experience with Istio or other service mesh technologies.
• Exposure to cloud platforms (Google Cloud Platform, AWS, Azure).
• Experience with observability and monitoring tools (Prometheus, Grafana, DataDog).
• Knowledge of security best practices in distributed architectures (OAuth2, RBAC, mTLS).
