The Senior Director I, Data Science (LII- APAC ) will lead Liberty Mutual’s data science team supporting Liberty international insurance(LII) APAC covering both Commercial and Specialty(C&S) and Retail products. This role will oversee a team of managers and data scientists (approximately 20 in total) dedicated to building, enhancing, and maintaining best-in-class predictive models and AI solutions that support all aspects of the insurance value chain.
This position reports to the LII data science leader and is matrixed to the Chief Actuary of LII-APAC . The leader in this role will play a critical part in both defining strategic vision and executing highly technical work , with an emphasis on ensuring timely delivery of new models, maintaining strong technical rigor, and identifying opportunities to improve current and future product designs. Collaboration will be essential, particularly with the Actuarial teams ,technology team supporting APAC as well as maintain a strong collaboration with peer DS leaders who support other regions of LII.
Responsibilities
- Lead and develop a team of managers and data scientists, fostering technical excellence and supporting professional growth.
- Provide both strategic and hands-on direction in Retail and Specialty predictive and AI model development, including technical oversight, execution, and timely delivery of new models.
- Oversee a center of excellence (COE) team that will perform timeboxed experiments in addition to providing needed support cross regions.Drive innovation in modeling techniques and processes, identifying opportunities to enhance current models and anticipate future product needs.
- Build and strengthen relationships with senior Product, UW and Claims leaders in the APAC region to ensure effective usage of products and to ensure transparency in value of solutions and cost of ownership.
- Coaches team to understanding of organizational vision and goals.
- Provides strategic and tactical direction at the highest levels. Has accountability for the performance and results of one or more large, strategically important business unit in an extremely large market.
- Works on issues of diverse scope where analysis of situation or data requires evaluation of a variety of factors, including an understanding of current business trends.
- Owns relationship with a defined segment of the business, delivering advanced tools and insights, including ongoing monitoring of metrics and initiatives.
- Responsible for highly technical, individualized and difficult to develop tools and their usage which are transformative in nature and have broad strategic impact to the aligned business units(s).
- Leads highly technical, complex, and cross functional projects that drive change across function, SBU or Corporate Department.
- Shapes the data science community and/or larger audiences and leads cross functional working groups.
Qualifications
- Education: Master’s or Bachelor's in Actuarial Science, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Financial Engineering, or a related quantitative field.
- Experience: 15 + years in P&C insurance/reinsurance/financial institutions analytics, including hands-on use of tools/coding/model building and leadership of multidisciplinary analytics teams.
- Technical Mastery: Deep knowledge of stochastic modelling; SQL/Python/R; and modern data-visualization tools, leverage AI techniques streamlining workflow.
- Commercial Acumen: Demonstrated ability to translate analytics into actionable recommendations that drive capital-efficient, return-accretive reinsurance structures.
- Communication & Influence: Exceptional skill distilling complex quantitative concepts into clear guidance for actuaries, underwriters, brokers, and market counterparts.
