We now have an exciting opportunity for a skilled and motivated Senior Energetic Materials Scientist / Engineer to join our growing team at DefendTex's Solid Rocket Motor Manufacturing Facility in Lang Lang, Victoria.

About the Role

The Senior Energetic Materials Scientist / Engineer will lead the synthesis, formulation, and testing of energetic materials used in solid rocket motors and other defence applications.
You will apply your technical expertise to ensure safe handling, consistent quality, and continuous improvement in the development and production of explosive compositions.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Lead formulation and processing of energetic materials including propellants, explosives, and binders.
  • Oversee laboratory operations, ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards.
  • Develop and optimise material synthesis and manufacturing methods.
  • Perform analytical testing, interpretation, and validation of material properties.
  • Support production scale-up and troubleshooting of chemical processes.
  • Maintain accurate technical records, safety data, and batch traceability.
  • Mentor junior chemists and technicians and contribute to training programs.
  • Collaborate with engineering, QA, and operations teams on product development.
About You

You are an experienced chemist who enjoys hands-on laboratory work and thrives in a technical environment where precision, safety, and innovation intersect.

Essential:

  • Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering (focus on energetics, materials, or explosives).
  • Extensive experience in energetic materials R&D, formulation, or production.
  • Experience handling and processing explosives or propellant ingredients.
  • Strong background in analytical chemistry and QA testing.
  • Understanding of safety management systems and explosives legislation.
  • Eligible to obtain and maintain an Australian Defence Security Clearance and Explosives License.

Desirable:

  • Experience in propellant formulation, casting, or processing.
  • Knowledge of REACH compliance or equivalent hazardous chemical regulations.
  • Experience supervising laboratory teams or projects.
