AEMO at the Heart of Energy

AEMO is Australia’s independent energy system and market operator and system planner. AEMO’s purpose is to ensure safe, reliable and affordable energy today, and enable the energy transition for the benefit of all Australians.  Australian governments are now committed to a net zero economy for Australia by 2050 and our vision is to enable this. We have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to co-design the future of our energy systems, and our core values revolve around character, commitment, and connection. Join us as we contribute to this significant transition in the energy sector.

About the role

AEMO’s System Design division is responsible for planning the power system in the context of unprecedented transformation. The rapid transition to renewable energy generation and electrification of many sectors (transport, industry etc) has seen sharp rises in proposed transmission connection projects. The Onboarding and Connections Group manages AEMO’s end to end process for connecting and registering generators into the National Electricity Market.

In this role you will have the opportunity to visit the projects you have contributed to and establish long term relationships with key players in the energy industry. Additionally, you will provide training and mentorship to emerging team members, while also building your reputation through participation in industry forums, working groups, conferences and memberships.

 What you will be doing

  • Provide expert technical advice and technical decision making, utilising constructive and open problem-solving processes, across the areas of performance standard assessment, power system stability, system strength remediation, registration and commissioning.
  • Facilitate new industry workshops to identify solutions to shared power system and market challenges, reducing uncertainty for new connections.
  • Create engineering competency frameworks and learning programs to support the development and succession of engineering talent within the team.
  • Proactively build AEMO’s reputation as a trusted partner to generation developers, original equipment manufacturers, Government, Network Service Providers, Market Participants, Customers and other stakeholders.
  • Develop a coordinated vision and framework for the integration of a variety of generation and storage technologies into the NEM.

What you will bring to the role

  • Relevant tertiary qualification in Electrical Engineering or other discipline relevant to power systems analysis.
  • A comprehensive understanding of AEMO’s pivotal role in facilitating connections and the significant impact our decisions have on commercial enterprises, projects and individuals.
  • Experience in leading and proactively delivering medium to large-scale, technically complex projects, utilising a service-orientated, outcome driven and pragmatic approach to problem solving.
  • Proven ability to mediate and resolve intricate technical challenges among stakeholders with diverse goals and a range of commercial and reputational considerations.
  • Knowledge of the primary commercial and legal issues impacting large-scale infrastructure projects, as well as the commercial drivers for generation developers.

In return some of our benefits to you

  • Flexible working: work from home, part time, job share, hybrid options, and additional leave options
  • Professional development via projects, industry networks, job rotation, study assistance and more.
  • Give back with up to 4 days of volunteering leave per year.
  • Reward your hard work with annual performance bonuses (subject to eligibility).
  • Embrace a healthier you with our wellness program, discounted health insurance, gym perks and our comprehensive Employee Assistance Program (EAP).
