Job Summary
Hargrove is currently hiring a licensed Professional Electrical Engineer (PE) with deep experience in high-voltage substation systems to join our growing team. This role focuses on the physical design, analysis, and execution of electrical substations up to 345kV, supporting projects from conceptual planning through construction and commissioning. The ideal candidate brings strong technical expertise, leadership capability, and a commitment to quality, safety, and mentoring junior engineers.
Key Responsibilities
Perform physical design of electrical substations in accordance with applicable codes, standards, and client requirements, including: General arrangement drawingsEquipment, electrical, and control building layoutsElevation viewsCable trench designEquipment grounding and ground gridsLightning protection systemsConduit and cable tray drawingsAC and DC power systemsArea lighting systemsBills of MaterialsPerform electrical calculations, studies, and analysis, including: Touch and step voltage analysisSubstation grounding calculationsPre- and post-energization harmonic studiesShort circuit studiesMechanical force calculations on bus bars due to fault currentsLoad flow and reactive power flow analysisHarmonic filter analysisNERC compliance analysisProtective relay coordinationTransient analysisSlack-span calculations for transmission line spansCorona performance studiesDevelop equipment and material specifications for outdoor switchyard equipment with operating voltages up to 345kVCreate procurement specifications and design scopes for engineered electrical equipment, including: Vacuum and SF₆ circuit breakersMotor-operated and gang-operated manual switchesPotential transformers (PTs) and current transformers (CTs)Station service transformersInsulators and surge arrestersStation service battery systemsReview, integrate, and manage vendor drawings and technical dataCoordinate with vendors to ensure timely and quality delivery of drawings, materials, and equipment per project schedulesComplete conceptual and preliminary designs for planning and estimating purposesPrepare supporting documentation for procurement, construction, and operations/maintenance activitiesParticipate in and/or lead client meetings and job site visits to gather and communicate engineering dataFollow Hargrove’s QA/QC program to ensure compliance across all design packagesMentor and support the development of less experienced engineers and designers in substation designQualifications
Bachelor of Science in Electrical EngineeringProfessional Engineer (PE) license requiredMinimum of 10 years of experience in substation physical designProven experience with high-voltage systems up to 345kVStrong document management, organization, and quality control skillsExceptional attention to detailAbility to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneouslyStrong written and verbal communication skillsPreferred Software Experience
Candidates should have working knowledge of, or experience with, the following tools:
AutoCAD and/or AutoCAD ElectricalBentley MicroStationETAP, SKM PowerTools, or ASPEN OneLinerCYMCAPPLS-CADD (or similar transmission line analysis software)Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook)Physical Requirements
