About the role:

Reporting to the Project Manager, you’ll supervise the end-to-end technical delivery of utility-scale BESS projects, with a focus on system integration across design, procurement, construction, and commissioning. This is a hands‑on role involving both office‑based coordination and site‑based execution, where you’ll ensure electrical, control, and safety systems are engineered, installed, and commissioned to specification.

A core expectation of this role is a strong grounding in practical electrical engineering, including the ability to read, interpret, and review electrical design and technical documents. You’ll be expected to provide hands‑on technical guidance, challenge design issues, and resolve problems in the field to ensure systems perform safely and reliably.

What You’ll Do

On‑Site Technical Supervision: Provide day‑to‑day technical oversight of construction and commissioning activities for utility‑scale BESS projects. Ensure contractors install electrical systems to specification, coordinate trades, and maintain technical quality throughout project execution.

System Integration Oversight: Oversee on‑site integration of BESS electrical systems including SCADA, inverters, PCS, EMS, fire suppression, and auxiliary infrastructure. Ensure systems are installed, configured, and tested to achieve seamless operation and grid connection compliance.

Design & Technical Problem review: Ensure design intent is achieved during construction. Identify constructability issues, review design clarifications, manage RFIs, and maintain compliance with specifications.

Quality Control & Compliance: Conduct inspections and technical verification of electrical work including HV infrastructure, protection systems, earthing, cable installations, and equipment integration. Ensure work meets Australian standards, AEMO/DNSP requirements, and project specifications.

Progress Tracking & Reporting: Track technical progress against project schedules, identify risks and delays, and provide clear reporting to the Project Manager. Maintain documentation including test records, as‑built information, and technical issue registers.

Stakeholder Coordination: Maintain effective communication between Project Manager, design consultants, contractors, OEM suppliers, and client representatives.

Safety & Site Management: Champion safety on site, ensure compliance with safety protocols and permit‑to‑work systems, and maintain safe working environment for all electrical activities including HV work.

Other duties may be assigned where reasonable for your position, skills, and experience.

Experience you will bring as a Senior Project Engineer:

You’re a technically capable electrical engineer with hands‑on site experience delivering utility‑scale BESS or renewable energy projects. You understand how BESS systems work in practice, from HV infrastructure through to control system integration, and can translate complex designs into practical installation and commissioning activities.

You’ll also bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in site‑based electrical engineering roles on utility‑scale BESS, solar, or transmission/distribution projects
  • Demonstrated experience overseeing construction and commissioning of HV electrical infrastructure
  • Understanding of the overall System Integration of BESS system components including inverters, PCS, EMS, and other integration requirements
  • Experience coordinating contractors and managing technical interfaces with OEM suppliers on site
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, single‑line diagrams, and technical specifications
  • Knowledge of Australian electrical standards, NER requirements, and AEMO/DNSP connection processes
  • Strong practical problem‑solving skills with ability to make technical decisions under pressure
  • Excellent communication skills with ability to coordinate diverse site teams
  • Willingness to be site‑based for extended periods (metro and regional locations)
