Senior Site Reliability / Gitops Engineer

Join Canonical as a Senior Site Reliability / Gitops Engineer and help drive automation and reliability across our global infrastructure. Canonical leads the open source industry with Ubuntu, a platform used by millions of users, and on proprietary infrastructure in public and private clouds.

Job Summary

The Information Systems (IS) team maintains all of Canonical’s IT production services. In this role you will develop and automate infrastructure in public and private clouds, define best practice for open source devops, and collaborate with developers to evolve the reliability stack.

Responsibilities

  • Lead automation and GitOps initiatives and embed a tech lead in the team.
  • Collaborate with the IS architect to align solutions with the architectural vision.
  • Design and architect infrastructure products that can be offered to the organization.
  • Apply and extend IaC practices to increase automation and improve processes across IS.
  • Automate software operations for re‑usability and consistency across private and public clouds.
  • Maintain operational responsibility for all core Canonical services, networks and infrastructure.
  • Execute troubleshooting, capacity planning and performance investigation; set up and maintain observability tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, and Elasticsearch; design and maintain monitoring and alerting for systems and services.
  • Provide assistance and collaborate with globally distributed peers.
  • Receive uninterrupted development time for larger projects and automation of manual tasks.
  • Share experience, best practices and mentorship during design sessions and collaboration.
  • Carry final responsibility for time‑critical escalations.

Qualifications

  • A modern view on hosting architecture, driven by infrastructure as code across private and public clouds.
  • A product mindset that thrives on developing products rather than isolated solutions.
  • Python software development experience with large projects.
  • Experience working with Kubernetes or other container orchestration systems.
  • Proven exposure to manage and deploy cloud infrastructure with code.
  • Practical knowledge of Linux networking, routing, and firewalls.
  • Affinity with various forms of Linux storage, from Ceph to Databases.
  • Hands‑on experience administering enterprise Linux servers.
  • Extensive knowledge of cloud computing concepts and technologies.
  • Bachelor’s degree or greater, preferably in computer science or related engineering field.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication in English.
  • Motivated and able to troubleshoot from kernel to web, and willing to ask others when appropriate.
  • Willingness to learn quickly and adapt to fast‑changing environments.
  • Happy to work within distributed teams.
  • Passionate and familiar with open‑source, especially Ubuntu or Debian.
