About The TeamThe Frontend Infrastructure team, part of the User Experience Foundations (UXF) group, is an eight‑person engineering team supported by an engineering manager and product manager. The team builds and maintains the frameworks, tools, and systems that make it faster and easier for Etsy’s engineers and designers to create high‑quality, performant user experiences across the site.
About The RoleThe contractor will support the Frontend Infrastructure team to enhance Etsy’s frontend development ecosystem. This work will focus on improving frameworks, build systems, and tooling that empower engineers and designers to create performant, reliable, and accessible user experiences.
Key Responsibilities- Designing, implementing, and improving core frontend infrastructure, including Etsy’s server‑side rendered React stack and modern JavaScript build pipelines (e.g., Vite).
- Developing and maintaining internal tools, automation, and shared libraries that improve engineering efficiency, code quality, and developer experience.
- Participating in architecture discussions, code reviews, and design planning to ensure technical consistency and scalability across the frontend ecosystem.
- Contributing to documentation and internal communications that support adoption, onboarding, and maintenance of shared frontend tools and systems.
- Supporting initiatives that make Etsy’s developer experience more inclusive and accessible for a global engineering community.
The contractor’s work will primarily use TypeScript/JavaScript and PHP, with emphasis on modern build tooling, frontend performance optimization, and cloud‑based infrastructure.
RequirementsMust‑Haves
- Strong proficiency in JavaScript and TypeScript, with experience building and maintaining modern frontend systems.
- Solid understanding of frontend architecture, build systems, and performance optimization for large‑scale web applications.
- Demonstrated experience improving developer tooling, CI/CD pipelines, or frontend infrastructure systems.
Nice‑to‑Haves
- Familiarity with PHP and server‑side rendered React applications.
- Experience with modern bundlers and build tools (e.g., Vite, Webpack, Rollup).
- Understanding of cloud environments and observability tools.
- Background working with design systems, shared component libraries, or developer experience platforms.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with a focus on inclusive and cross‑functional teamwork.
Time zone requirement: Etsy PrimeTime – 11 am – 2 pm EST.
Possibility for extension or permanent role: may extend or convert, depending on the needs of the team, budget availability, and contractor performance.
Interview Process- 30‑minute manager + product manager screen, followed by a 30–60 minute technical assessment (e.g., live coding session or technical deep dive) with two members of the hiring team.
