Job Description
Space is a critical domain, connecting our technologies, our security and our humanity. While others view space as a destination, we see it as a realm of possibilities, where we can do more — we can innovate, invest, inspire and integrate our capabilities to transform the future.
At Lockheed Martin Space, we aim to harness the full potential of space to cultivate innovation, reduce costs, and push the boundaries of what technology can achieve. We’re creating future-ready solutions, focusing on resiliency and urgency through our 21st Century Security® vision. We’re erasing boundaries and forming partnerships across industries and around the world. We’re advancing spacecraft and the workforce to fuel the next generation. And we’re reimagining how space can connect us, ensuring security and prosperity.
Lockheed Martin is leading the way in hypersonic missile development and we want you to be a part of it! We are creating the first hypersonic boost/glide system for the US Army and Navy here on the Conventional Prompt Strike (CPS) program, and our NGC-SW Integrated Product Team (IPT) is responsible for the algorithms and software that control it. Our group includes the Navigation, Guidance, and Control (NG&C or GN&C) subsystem, which flies the missile and glide body, and the embedded Flight Software (FSW) which hosts the NG&C algorithms and provides health, status, and sequencing for the entire system. Additionally, we develop and maintain the Flight Software testbeds (HILs or HWILs) which provide complete hardware integration testing with feedback and flight simulation to test the NG&C algorithms and flight software.
Lockheed Martin Space is seeking a full time Staff Software Engineer to serve as a Software Architect for the CPS program. The Staff Software Engineer will serve as a Software architect for the Conventional Prompt Strike (CPS) hypersonic missile program, defining and driving the end to end software strategy for guidance, navigation, and control systems. This role blends deep technical expertise in real time, fault tolerant software with system level integration, ensuring robust, secure, and maintainable code that meets stringent performance and safety requirements across a high tempo, defense focused development environment.
Desired skills
• Proven track record mentoring junior engineers and leading cross‑functional software review boards (SRBs) or technical authority panels.
• Experience with Agile/SAFe or other iterative development frameworks applied to high‑integrity systems, including continuous‑integration/continuous‑deployment (CI/CD) pipelines for embedded targets.
• Proven software‑architecture leadership on at least one safety‑critical, real‑time program (e.g., missile flight‑control, hypersonic vehicle, or other DoD high‑performance system), with documented responsibility for defining system‑wide software frameworks, integration strategy, and verification/validation plans.
• Mentorship & technical authority: acted as the technical authority for software architecture, mentored senior and junior engineers, and produced training or guidance documents that elevated the program’s architectural competency.
• Active DoD Secret clearance
