Position Information

Description & Details: Assist the State Forests Manager in carrying out the goals and objectives of the State Forests Management program. Duties include carrying out management activities on 13,945 acres of state forest lands, maintaining day-use and campground recreational facilities, maintaining an office and shop complex, and small equipment use and maintenance. Additional duties include assisting with nursery spring start-up and fall packaging.

Work Schedule: 40 hours/week; 8 - 5 or similar, M - F with occasional evening and weekend work required.

Hiring Range: $45,000 - $49,000 + DOE

Pay is based on several factors, including budget, labor market, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and/or certification and other business considerations.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • High school diploma or GED and two years related work experience (small equipment operation, power tool use, tree trimming, mowing, repairs, data collection) OR Associate degree in natural resources, forestry or related field.

  • Valid Driver's license.

  • Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Associate degree in natural resources, forestry or related field.

  • Ability to obtain ND pesticide applicator certification.

  • Ability to obtain a North Dakota Class A CDL.

  • Core Competencies:

  • Work both independently and cooperatively with others.

  • Safely and effectively operate grounds maintenance equipment, hand tools, power tools, and basic forestry equipment such as chainsaws and pole pruners.

  • Technology skills adequate to use email, spreadsheets, word processing, and to enter field records and location data into various software applications.

  • Work safely indoors and outdoors in all types of weather.

  • Follow directions, policies and procedures.

  • Engage in respectful discussions.

  • Problem solving skills - able to identify and calmly resolve issues.

    About Us:

    The North Dakota Forest Service, part of North Dakota State University, is the state agency which administers cooperative forestry programs statewide. The agency provides technical assistance relating to the management of private forest lands, state forest lands, urban and community forests, tree planting, and wildfire protection.
