Job Description

Job details

The Sub-Arc Welder is a specialized role focused on the high-quality joining of heavy-gauge
plates and cylinders to fabricate pressure vessels and tanks. You will set up and operate
automated Submerged Arc Welding (SAW) systems (tractors, booms, or manipulators) to
produce deep-penetration welds that meet strict industry codes (such as ASME). This position ...

requires a high level of technical skill in managing weld parameters to ensure structural integrity
and X-ray quality seams.

Responsibilities:
??? Automated System Setup:
??? Set up and configure Submerged Arc Welding equipment, including power
sources, wire feeders, and flux recovery systems ??? per procedural requirements
??? Position vessels on tank rollers (turning rolls) and align welding heads for
circumferential (girth) or longitudinal seams.
??? Parameter Programming & Adjustment:
??? Interpret Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) to set correct amperage,
voltage, and travel speeds.
??? Select the appropriate wire diameters and flux types based on the material grade
and vessel wall thickness.

??? Welding Operations:
??? Execute multi-pass welds on heavy-wall vessels, ensuring consistent bead profile
and penetration.
??? Monitor the welding process continuously to prevent defects such as porosity,
slag inclusions, or undercut.
??? Manage flux delivery and recovery to ensure the arc remains fully submerged
and protected.
??? Quality Control & Inspection:
??? Perform visual inspections of weld beads for uniformity and cleanliness.
??? Prepare weld joints by grinding or cleaning to ensure they meet the standards
required for Non-Destructive Testing (NDT), such as X-ray or Ultrasound.
??? Maintain traceability by documenting heat numbers and weld logs as required by
quality manuals.
??? Equipment Maintenance:
??? Perform routine maintenance on SAW equipment, including cleaning flux
hoppers and replacing contact tips.

Required Skills & Qualifications

??? Technical Expertise: Proven experience with Submerged Arc Welding (SAW)
specifically within a pressure vessel or heavy structural environment.
??? Blueprint Reading: Ability to read and interpret complex fabrication drawings, weld
symbols, and ASME code requirements. (not needed)
??? Equipment Proficiency: Experience using tank rollers, welding manipulators, and
overhead cranes for vessel positioning.
??? Quality Mindset: Understanding of "X-ray quality" welding standards and the ability to
pass required weld tests (6G or similar certifications).
??? Physical Demands: Ability to work in and around large cylindrical vessels, often
requiring working from heights and or confined spaces.

Working hours: 6:00 AM - 6:00 PM (Various Shifts Available)

Skills:
- Certifications: Current or previous ASME Section IX certification.
- Experience: Familiarity with various materials (Carbon Steel, Stainless Steel, or Alloy
Steels).
- Safety: Knowledge of rigging and overhead crane operation for moving large vessel
shells.

Education:
High School

Experience:
1-4 years
