Large size government department Brisbane CBD location hybrid WFH flex 12 month contract with interesting project work

We’re partnering with a large Queensland Government department seeking an experienced System Administrator to help manage and evolve their enterprise virtualisation and storage environment.
This role sits within a high-performing Storage & Virtualisation team that underpins the digital infrastructure powering multiple state government agencies. What you’ll be doing

  • Administer and optimise VMware vSphere ESXi / vCenter and Aria Suite (with transition to VCF 9)
  • Support virtual desktop and backup/recovery platforms across large-scale environments
  • Manage enterprise NAS and Fibre Channel SAN infrastructure
  • Support cloud storage technologies – Azure Files, Azure Blob, AWS S3
  • Troubleshoot incidents, respond to service requests, and engage with vendors when needed
  • Deliver infrastructure patches, upgrades, and lifecycle refreshes
  • Automate, script, and streamline — using PowerShell or Linux scripting
  • Keep documentation sharp and accurate
  • Be part of duty and on-call rosters, ensuring uptime for critical systems

What we’re looking for

  • Strong hands-on experience with VMware vSphere ESXi & vCenter (v7 or v8)
  • Solid Linux administration background (ideally Red Hat Enterprise)
  • Scripting ability — PowerShell or Bash for automation and data collection
  • Understanding of backup, NAS, and SAN fundamentals
  • Exposure to server hardware (firmware updates, troubleshooting, vendor liaison)

Bonus points for

  • Experience with VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF), NSX, Aria Automation, or Omnissa Horizon
  • Knowledge of HPE Synergy, Brocade SAN, PureStorage, Hitachi, or DELL Isilon
  • Familiarity with DELL Avamar, PowerProtect, or Data Domain
  • Experience with Terraform, GitHub, or Visual Studio
  • Cloud integration experience (AWS / Azure storage services)
