Summary

The Systems Administrator II/VDI Engineer supports the design, configuration, and sustainment of the Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) environment used across PMW 790’s STACC enterprise. This role ensures secure, reliable, and efficient desktop virtualization services that enable remote and on-premises operations for shore and expeditionary users. The engineer applies expertise in virtualization, system patching, imaging, and end-user performance optimization to maintain continuous system availability in accordance with DoD cybersecurity and configuration-management standards.

Responsibilities

+ Administer and maintain VDI platforms (e.g., VMware Horizon, Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops), including thin-client, MEC, and remote desktop infrastructure.

+ Create, deploy, and update standardized desktop images and applications in accordance with configuration-control and cybersecurity requirements.

+ Monitor system performance, resource utilization, and capacity; troubleshoot user connectivity issues; and implement corrective actions.

+ Apply security patches, group-policy updates, and OS/application baselines per DISA STIG and RMF requirements.

+ Coordinate with network, cybersecurity, and platform teams to integrate authentication, storage, and backup solutions into the VDI environment.

+ Support disaster-recovery planning and validation for critical workstation services.

+ Maintain detailed documentation of configurations, procedures, and system diagrams.

+ Provide Tier II/III technical support and assist with user onboarding, training, and account provisioning.

+ Recommend improvements in VDI performance, scalability, and user experience through automation or modernization initiatives.

+ Manage VDI-related enterprise tools, including Horizon Connection Server, profile management, and image-automation platforms (e.g., App Volumes, Ivanti, or FSLogix).

Qualifications

+ Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related technical field (or equivalent experience).

+ Experience supporting virtual desktop environments within Navy or DoD enterprise infrastructures (e.g., PMW 790, PEO C4I, or NAVWAR programs) preferred.

+ VMware or Citrix certifications preferred.

+ Security+ and Windows imaging experience required.

+ 4+ years of VDI or desktop support experience.

+ Ability to work both independently and as part of a cross-functional team; ready for occasional travel or onsite support as required.

+ Proven problem-solving abilities with strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.

+ Excellent communication skills: able to explain technical issues to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
