Indeed, BESS are an important part of the global decarbonization drive, providing flexibility to systems and portfolios by replacing part of conventional generation (coal exit), complementing the increasing expansion of renewables, and helping to balance power grids (ancillary) and store excess energy (arbitrage). Several countries have been identified as promising for BESS investments, as they have strong potential for capacity additions in the coming years, driven by ambitious decarbonization targets, projected exponential growth in renewables and the retirement of ageing conventional power plants.
