Job Description

Summary

The Systems Engineer III/Infrastructure Engineer II leads the design, implementation, optimization, and sustainment of mission-critical compute, storage, and virtualization systems supporting PMW 790 operations. This position serves as a subject-matter expert across data center, automation, and hybrid cloud technologies, influencing architecture decisions and mentoring junior engineers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the architecture, deployment, and lifecycle management of infrastructure systems—including virtualized servers, storage/SAN/VSAN, backup/recovery, and hybrid-cloud platforms—and support system capacity forecasting and performance optimization.

  • Select, integrate, and manage infrastructure hardware, software, and tools; perform performance tuning, capacity planning, and lifecycle upgrades.

  • Develop and implement automation, orchestration, infrastructure-as-code (IaC), and configuration management strategies to improve the scalability, reliability, and maintainability of infrastructure.

  • Ensure systems meet security, compliance, and operational requirements; incorporate DoD and enterprise hardening standards, RMF controls, disaster recovery, and continuity of operations planning.

  • Provide leadership and technical guidance to junior engineers, coordinate cross-functional teams (network, cyber, storage, applications), and serve as an escalation point for complex issues.

  • Drive infrastructure modernization efforts, evaluate emerging technologies (e.g., software-defined infrastructure, hybrid cloud, container hosting), and propose solutions aligned with business/mission objectives.

  • Produce and maintain technical documentation, architecture diagrams, operational procedures, and training materials.

  • Monitor system health and reliability, respond to incidents, perform root cause analysis, and implement corrective actions to minimize downtime.

  • Participate in budgeting, procurement planning, vendor management, and evaluation of lifecycle costs for infrastructure components.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Information Systems, or related field (or equivalent work experience).

  • Demonstrated expertise in VMware NSX-T, vSAN, and infrastructure-automation technologies.

  • Knowledge of DoD RMF and system hardening.

  • 5 + years in data center or virtualization engineering.

  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a cross-functional team; ready for occasional travel or onsite support as required.

  • Proven problem-solving abilities with strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.

  • Excellent communication skills: able to explain technical issues to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
